Auburn's history begins when a man named Bill Vanhook came to Nome in 1911 from a fishing village north of the Arctic Circle. In Nome he entered the old ways of dog mushers and used this old Eskimo art to deliver mail and freight in the remote Alaskan wilderness. Bill began to specialize in Siberian Huskies. Between 1921 and 1923, Bill and his teams of Huskies astonished the mushing world by winning the All Alaskan Sweepstakes race three years in a row. It was about this time that a skinny, mischievous pup named Auburn worked himself into Bill's life. Vanhook doubted the pup's potential. When he was eight months old, Auburn freed himself to chase after Vanhook's dog sled team, chased them up a trail and caught up to them easily. Vanhook had to bring the young dog along if only to keep an eye on him. By the end of the day Auburn had proven himself and had earned a place as lead dog, a position he held for 75 miles. When the diphtheria started to spread, Vanhook stepped forward. He had the experience, the dogs were fit and ready and he did it to save the town. He and his team, led by Auburn, with Steele and Star behind him, took the first sled out of Nome. They made it to Nenana, but on the way back, there was an accident. He slipped on some ice, and he tried to stop, but they kept moving. The sled slammed against the sides of a narrow valley, and Bill was knocked out. At the bottom of the slope, they came to rest, and the dogs landed in different spots. Hours later, Balto came by, he and Steele had that fight, and then, with the team being led by Balto, they left only Steele behind. Later when they returned, after the crate of serum had been taken in to the hospital by the doctor, all the dogs, along with Balto, recieved lots of cheers and hugs from Nome's citizens. Then Balto was led by Rosy's father into the hospital to cheer Rosy up, then Jenna showed up. Auburn saw his sister Jenna playing with Balto. He went up to Balto and congratulated him. Balto thanked him, then Auburn walked away and laid down by himself in the boiler room. After that he decided to quit the team.
