Background: When he was born in 1924 in Nome, he was the biggest of his siblings. When he was one-and-a-half years old, he was put on a sled team after about 8 to 9 months of training. He was lead dog. Two years later, when the rest of the team was being prepared for a mail run to Nenana, Durango started growling and chasing him. When he was cornered in an alleyway, Durango knocked him to the ground and bit his neck and held on for a few minutes until he was hardly moving but still breathing. He lay there on his right side. Durango then ran off, knocking over a few heavy wooden beams leaning against the side of a building. They all fell onto Harper's left leg, breaking it. His musher heard all the commotion, and when he saw him lying there with about 3 or 4 heavy wooden beams on his leg, he moved them and saw that Harper's leg was broken. The man took him to the hospital to be taken care of. Harper's left leg was broken so bad, it had to be amputated then bandaged until it healed. 1 to 2 months later, it was fully healed. Harper was removed from the team indefinitely and replaced. Since his removal from the team, he just wanders around town.
