Bio: Knik was adopted by Jerry Gunderson, a mountain man who preferred to trap and hunt for a living. He and Jerry roamed a large expanse of territory to the east of Nome. However, Knik only lived with the man a few weeks before he was gored by an angry moose. A week later, a friend of Jerry discovered the body, and the lonely, hungry Knik locked up alone in the cabin. The man knew Jerry's affairs well, and knew where the pup had come from. He returned Knik to Rosie's father.
Rosie's father knew Knik was being trained to hunt, and decided to carry on where Jerry's training cut short. Now that he had a dog already partially trained for the task, Rosie's father took a shine to hunting. Knik got an enormous thrill out of helping his master hunt, but that was the one thing he struggled with the most. His biggest problem was that he couldn't scent a trail, among other problems. Balto, his father, tried repeatedly to teach him, but teaching was not a talent he possessed, and Knik just never learned. This was a serious point of tension between father and son, and led to countless arguments.
Balto and Knik narrowly avoided a devastating rift in their relationship when Balto pushed his son a little too hard. Their relationship healed, and was better than ever, even though they still had their flash points.
Knik was devastated to learn that Aleu had run away without saying goodbye. He was very close with all his siblings, and made a point to visit with them regularly, which was very difficult because they had been dispersed over a wide area.
Knik was always wound a little too tight. It wasn't his fault, just who he was; he took himself far too seriously, and Balto sometimes blamed himself for that; Given a position of responsibility, Knik would fulfill it faithfully, but would worry himself sick if something went wrong. When pushed to the edge, either by heckling or stupidity, he could become angry and unreasonable, and had a tendency to lose his temper and make a fool of himself.
