Nine months after he was born, he and his siblings were playing in the woods near the cabin. The cabin's resident was cooking meat in front of the stove, and the smell was blowing throught the forest. A bear, attracted by the smell of the meat, came out of the woods. The parents, startled by the bear's sudden appearance, told the pups to get behind them, then proceeded to bark and growl at the bear as it tried to get past them, its attention now turned on the pups. The pups ran back to the cabin, frightened, and watched as their parents fought the bear, who threw them against a tree and once they were lying on the ground, pushed them into the ground with its front paws. The two snaps were heard even from inside the cabin. The pups heard them, and couldn't believe it. Their parents were dead. In the following months, the pups adjusted to life without their parents. A year later, when they were 1 1/2, they each had gotten over their parents' deaths. The man sadly took the pups into Nome in a crate and left them to be adopted. Moose was adopted by a man who used to be a hunter, and who still lived in a cabin. He brought young Moose to his cabin in the woods. A few days later, he was exploring the woods when he was attacked by a fierce and hungry wolf. After the fight, his right ear had been chewed on a bit, and got a long, deep scratch on the side of his left leg, and four deep scratches on his left shoulder. When he felt he could stand up again, he limped back to the cabin, and was tended to by his owner. A few weeks later, he was better, but the scratches remained. Now, 1 1/2 years later, he lives in Nome. The scratches still cause him daily pain, and he always walks with a limp.
