A couple weeks after he was born (1 - 2 weeks), while he and his siblings were still nursing, a fire broke out in the building they were in. The father saw the fire, and heard the distant frightened screams of the mother and the pups, and ran there as fast as he could. When he got there, he went in and tried to save as many of the pups as possible. Santander was the first to be saved. When he went in to grab another, the building collapsed with the father, mother, and other pups still inside. They never came out. Someone came along and saw young Santander lying in the the street, shivering and frightened. They picked him up and took him to their home, where he was put with a female dog he had, and who was also nursing pups. After 6 or 7 weeks, Santander was put up for adoption with the pups, and was picked up by a musher, who, over the course of 2 years, trained him to be a sled dog. He was placed as lead dog because he could run faster than the other dogs on the team. Over a couple months, he won many races and became widely known throughout Alaska.
