Shadow was the first character introduced after Balto's death. He was originally a slave under Ivy, and was told to kill Aleu. However, the more he spent time with her, the more he realized he loved her. In the end, he ended up temporarily destroying Ivy, and became Aleu's mate.

Later, after the two of them met up with Varadan on their way to New York, Shadow saved Aleu from a wolf named Aparie. During this ordeal, he became the first person to see Balto in his White Wolf form, though Aleu and Varadan both saw this later. He stuck by Aleu's side as long as he could, sometimes risking his own life in order to keep her safe.

He and Aleu stayed mates for several years, but that ended when Shadow sacrificed his own life in order to ensure that Aleu would live. Aniu brought him back to life, however, and the rest of his travels were spent with him desperately trying to catch up to Aleu. During this time, he found out Ivy was still alive, and encountered him a few times before finally finding Aleu. After Aleu killed Ivy, and before she died herself from the injuries, he found out she had a daughter, and promised to take care of her. Shadow was the only person to be with Aleu when she died. Four years later, he and Varadan died in their sleep, and now are with Aleu again.

Shadow is the son of Follery, Balto's brother, making him and Aleu cousins. He is noted several times for being nearly identical to Balto, both in appearance and voice tone. The scar on his eye was received from a caribou stampede when he was very young. Most importantly of all, he loves Aleu with all his heart.
