She was born in 1924 on a farm in Salina, Kansas. She was the calmest of her siblings, just wanting to lay down and sleep most of the time. In the early months of 1925, when she was 1, she heard spreading rumors about a diphtheria outbreak in Alaska and that a wolfdog named Balto had saved the town of Nome. Since it didn't happen where she lived, she didn't really think much of it. A few months later, she was playing around some of her owner's farm equipment, when she fell off and cut her front right paw very deep, almost to the bone. When her owner found her, she was quickly taken to the local hospital, where the lower 6 or 7 inches of the leg were removed, then bandaged. A month later, when the stump was healed, the bandage was removed and she was taken back to the farm. After the incident, she was scared of the farm equipment, and still refuses to go anywhere near it.
