The Truth About the Balto Characters

Written by DrewTheWolf {AB} :

I did some research a bit on some of the questions that often remained unanswered from the film.  Logging on to IMDB I was able to discover interestingly enough that some answers were provided and not in the fourms section:

For instance a lot of views often wonder
Who the blue dog is behind Jenna in the racing scene. IMDB Provides the answer below:
When Jenna, Sylvie, and Dixie are walking in the street, a Balto look-alike can be seen behind them being pulled by its owner. This dog is Balto's old design.

What does Aniu mean?
Aniu is the inuit word for snow

What kind of dogs are Star, Nikki and Kaltag?

  • Kaltag's character design is based on a Chinook.
  • Nikki is a chow-chow.
  • Star is an Alaskan Klee Kai.

What Kind of Dog Is Steele?

Steele is a Siberian Husky.

Star is a Siberian husky, kaltag is a Alaskan husky, (there is a difference) Kaltag's girl also just broken up with him, because of his black eye. And still, WHY a Chow-Chow?!?!?

BUT Star and kaltag WERE proababaly ment to be huskies.
And I don't get WHY a Chow-Chow would be in a sled team.
AND Steele IS a malamute.

Thank you you so much for clearing things up for me!!!I really
thought

you would have
said what Balto was though.People says hes pure
Husky and others say
hes a mut yet others say hes a pure
wolf.Plus is he a grey wolf or
some other type of wolf like a
brown artic wolf or somethng.

Thank you, this was a very good read. I have always thought that
Kaltag was a Chinook.

I was always under the impression that Steele was a malamute, but I
was wrong! It makes perfect sense that he is a Siberian Husky! This is
good to know, I'm glad you wrote this article to clear this up!

As ever so many fans on this forum have said, Meeko, fans are still
free to interpret the characters, the story and the "what-if" however
they want. Sometimes that leads to frustrating debates and
troublesome interpretations by fans, but it is a freedom we all
enjoy.

Yes, "officially" it is over. But as we have
already seen with the question of Star being based off of an Alaskan
Klee-klai, the production team itself didn't do a terribly good job in
developing those characters (I could post a historical image of a
Chinook of the time to demonstrate how flawed the team's notion of
basing Kaltag off of one is, but I don't want to get too overbearing
in providing counter research. But Chinooks? Yeah...flop
ears...and big. Bigger than Kaltag. And I've never seen markings on a historical, or even modern, Chinook which even remotely resemble Kaltag's. Coloration? Yes. Markings? Nope. Heh...)

Didn't mean
to take anything away from your post. Because you are right. But
neither are fans wrong if they wish to interpret Steele as an Alaskan
Malamute instead of as a Siberian husky.

Well at least the Steele=Malamute/Steele=Husky debate is officially
over.
