I use the terms "Fourth of July" and "Independence Day"
interchangeably. It's little different than "Cinco De Mayo" being
such a celebration even here in the U.S. (though it is a Mexican
holiday and celebration), and even though that day doesn't celebrate
the independence of Mexico from Spain as much as it celebrates the
victory of the Mexican army against the French and Austrians (a rather
long and convoluted story, unfortunately). And yet, because of the nature of people (adults, adolescents and children), most people simply view these days as an excuse to have parties, barbecues, and time off from work and/or school (depending upon the time of year) rather than observing the historical importance of these dates. And as much in the U.S. as in other countries. Personally, being a person who places such value in history (as everyone should), I find that phenomenon extremely upsetting and, in the case of Americans who behave this way, quite a national embarrassment. At least it's not everyone. And, lately, it seems the level of patriotism and understanding of national history is finally becoming important to Americans again...as our fundamental rights, laid down in our Constitution and Bill of Rights, are being gradually and systematically attacked by elements of our own government. I'd better stop. I could go on, but it wouldn't go anywhere good. |

Thank you all! I prefer to call it '4th of july' simply because it's shorter to type. xD Hopefully, most who celebrate it know that it's the remembrance of Independence. |

It is a celebration and remembrance of the victory of the 13 former
English colonies (Delaware, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island,
New York, Connecticut, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Virginia, South
Carolina, North Carolina, Maryland and Georgia) against the British
Empire...which began formally in 1776, but had its roots further back
in time. Here is a good place to go and learn about it (I don't know of any Spanish-language websites on this...and I looked for you. But you can probably find something if you can translate "American Revolution" or "American Revolutionary War" into your own language and enter it into a search engine): http://theamericanrevolution.org/ |

-->Gateliyou, it is the United States' Independence Day celebration.
"4th of July" and "Independence Day" have no distinction to us, and
for some reason, we frequently choose the more obscure term "4th of
July". |
