Kelsey's Rendering Tutorial

A lot of members have been asking how I make my renders look just like screenshots. Well here are my steps and secrets C:

Keep in mind these are ALL made in photoshop!

1. Choose a good render. You'll want one with good quality so it's easier to render over.

2. Draw your lineart. I never follow all the lines exactly, especially for the Balto 2 and 3 because their styles are different from Balto 1 (style I like to render in), also because I see a lot of errors in anatomy that I feel the need to fix. I also don't like using the pen tool because then it doesn't give that hand drawn 2D feel.

3. Colors. NEVER use solid blacks or whites! (unless the lighting is dramatically light or dark). I use colors straight from the screenshot to help with color choice. Once you've finished coloring go to Filter - Noise - Add Noise (make sure Monochromatic is unchecked) to give the color a pixeling ol' feeling. Next go to Filter - Noise - Despeckle. This will blend the pixels so they're not so dramatic.

4. Next change your lineart do a mid grey color and set your layer to Multiply. This will make the lineart match the color it is surrounding. If some areas look to light (usually the eyes or nose), leave the lineart black.

4. Choose a background. Try to find one that looks like it matches the angle and perspective of your character. Also try to find one that's good quality.

5. Lighting effects. Characters in movies are never 1 solid color. Their colors change with the backgrounds they're in. In this tutorial, Balto is FAR too bright. To change that, make a new layer above the color, hold ctrl - alt - g (this makes it so it ONLY shows on your colored layer), fill in the layer with a dark, pale blue, set the layer to Multiply, and change the opacity till it matches the background's lighting.

6. This is the final step. Save your image as a JPEG. This will help blend the character and give it that ol' low quality screenshot feel.

I hope this helps answer all your questions! If you have anymore, just ask C:

Juu - Fixed that typo xD Thanks for telling me about it.

That's why I put that it should be a good angel and 'perspective'. That meaning the BG should be the correct size. I guess some member may not know what perspective means. It's a very vague word.

Thanks for the comment, Juu! Glad I could be of help!

This is really good... and very helpful! Although I'm good with renders and I use PSP X [too cheap for Photoshop, but they're pretty similar], this is something I would definitely use for some extra tips to improve, especially with the shading part - shading is my weakness. XD When I make a new render, I'll definitely make sure you see it!

Also, I think in step 4, you meant "angle", not angel. It happens. XD

Also-also, you might want to mention something about size when it comes to backgrounds; I've seen a lot of renders with dogs/huskies/wolves that are the size of buildings because of the background that they choose and it makes their characters appear... unrealistic. Just a suggestion, of course, but mostly everything else here is excellent.

Kelsey, you are so very helpful and [hopefully] this will be much appreciated to the rendering community around here! Also, your render of puppy!Balto is adorably cute.

Rainbow - I NEVER use pencil. It's all hard brush. I set the pen pressure ON for both opacity jitter and flow jitter (this can be found by clicking F5 and going to Other Dynamics)

Nice tutorial! But what is the tool you used for Step 2? Soft Brush? Hard brush? Pencil?

I don't think I did enough when I added noise to it though, and its still not as aweseome as your renders though ^^
