He was born in a puppy mill in Juneau in 1920. The conditions there were horrible. The kennels were so small that some dogs couldn't even turn around, and all the dogs received little to no food or water. There was only one area in the whole building that was bigger than the kennels: the area where the pups were born. A few weeks after 12-5 and his siblings were born, they were assigned a number written on a tag, which was then attached to their ear on a ring similar to an earring. The first number indicated the number litter born in the building, while the second indicated the order in which they were born in that litter. So he was the 5th pup in the 12th litter born there. When he was 8 1/2 weeks old, after receiving little food or water for weeks, he escaped from the puppy mill and ran away without a destination in mind. A month or two later, he reached the town of Nome. By then, he was about 3 months old. He grew up enduring dogs making fun of his tag. He was especially fearful of Steele. He lives in the Nome post office, and has been for about 3 years now. The town's dogs are now used to the tag on 12-5's right ear, and have stopped making fun of it for about 2 years. No-one's tried to take it off, but now he doesn't want anyone to, because he's used to it and doesn't mind it.
