Finally . . .
Their mother, Immi, like them, stood stock still, eyes wide, staring at the big grey buck in the trees.
Then slowly, she took a step forward, towards the stranger. Then another.
Gillo and Grupa watched her, motionless, uncertain.
She took one more step towards the buck - one more, because the rest of the way she bounded.
'Gillo! Grupa!'' she laughed. A tearful, happy laugh. She reached the grey buck and licked him ceaselessly. 'Boys! Come and meet your FATHER!'
Gillo and Grupa did not move. They gazed on at their mother as she joyfully caressed the big, strong, fatherly-looking buck; Gneiss; their own sire, whom they had never seen, never met. And now finally . . .
Gneiss, nuzzling his little mate after they had been parted for so long, glanced up at the two fine yearlings, looking wise for their age; Gillo and Grupa; his own offspring, whom he had never met. And now finally . . .
