Pitates both past and recent (and I'd class him as recent) were just part of a system of supply and demand. Blackbeard, along with being fun company was not so much of a treasure hunter as a guy who 'aquired' stuff for less prosporus coloney's and sold it too them.

I could see that much of the stuff he gets is sold on black markets.

Thinking of Blackbeard, I think most of his targets are ships on the open seas and doesn't tackle stuff in the air unless his radio boys can tell it's of value.

Also his aircraft, that look like a modified Curtiss R3C racer look like they are cheep makeshift machines that although many parts can be captured would need some 'made too measure' ones.

Yes it's not very clear what the air pirates do from the stuff they steal in the show. We know they keep some of them though (ex : the giant mirrors, the iron vulture itself)
So yes, it's possible that they sell the rest on black markets.

Just real pirates from 1700 to today do, too be honest I think the demand from the depression may have caused Karnage and co too start up.
