i just not understood a thing: why the PAl version is the best and not the NTSC one? i mean, they are diferents in the frames? one have more cuts than other?

Because the PAL version is widescreen, and the US one isn't.[/quote]

Interesting, you forget:
Region 2 ntsc (japan) region 3 ntsc (southeast of asia) and region 4 ntsc (south and central america) that have version in widescreen....

The ntsc world is not only usa and canada....

That's why I usually say "non-US" dvd instead of NTSC and PAL  Don't know why I said PAL that time...

Forgive me for digging up such an old topic, but does this mean there is a NTSC widescreen version of Balto? I payed overseas shipping and a tariff to get the UK version, and the first thing I noticed was the pitch of the audio was higher. It drives me nuts!

Now THAT is the proper way for someone to step into reviving an old topic! Image

Unfortunately, I don't have any answer to the question. Sorry. I just thought it was nice to see someone actually be mindful of reviving old topics and how to be POLITE about it!

I'm not sure, is there anything wrong with the disc or is it as it should be?

It plays exactly as it was meant to. The problem is the difference between PAL's 25 frames per second and Hollywood's 23.976 frames per second. PAL formatted movies playback 4% faster than the original theatrical release, causing music and voices to be heard at a higher pitch. NTSC formatted movies use a process identified as 3:2 Pulldown to accommodate NTSC's native 29.970 frames per second. This means NTSC allows the audio to be played back at the proper speed. If I could find a NTSC widescreen version of Balto, the music would sound like it does on the CD and Kevin Bacon would sound like Kevin Bacon, all while seeing the movie as it was (nearly) meant to be seen.

I fear this topic has ventured away from laserdiscs. Perhaps this conversation should continue in its own thread. But don't lock this one!

I suppose it does need to be moved. xD I'm not sure if you can fix the problem, but I'm not a computer wizz. I don't recall any NTSC widescreen versions, I tried searching for you but this is the only thing that came up --> http://www.amazon.co.uk/Balto-DVD-Regio ... B00005TSMN
Is that the one you have?
