What is the purpose of the dog in The Aristocats? It was only them for about 30 minutes in the movie. Were they more important than Dutchess and her kittens?

Well, from what I heard they didn't really have a real purpose in the story. They were just acting like real stray dogs guarding their own territory. They like chasing any vehicle they see, so when Edger came on their territory with his motorcycle, their dog's instincts told them to chase him.

They helped the movie transition from one scene to another, but that's about it. (Aside from entertainment purposes.) The writers could have easily left them out if they wanted to I'm sure.

I swear I've seen this question before and answered it, but anyway:
I still believe that the dogs had somewhat of a purpose. They may be the Timon and Pumbaa of Aristocats. Not just in comic relief but also that they helped save a life. ...Err lives. I think if it weren't for the dogs, the butler may have been successful in really offing Duchess and her kittens. My memory of the film's a tad hazy, but they did keep the Butler busy from finding the cats or even finishing the job the first time. So really the dogs weren't useless.

I agreed though it doesn't make sense that they have southern American accents.
