Statues & MountsBalto Statue The most famous "Serum Run landmark" would be the bronze Balto statue in New York Central Park. Built in 1925 by sculpter Frederick George Richard Roth. It describes on the text, "
Dedicated to the indomitable spirit of the sled dogs that relayed antitoxins 660 miles over rough ice, across treacherous waters, through Arctic blizzards from Nenana to the relief of stricken Nome in the Winter of 1925.
Endurance - Fidelity - Intelligence"
Balto's Mount Balto passed away in the confort of Cleveland, were he still is today, mounted in the 'Cleveland Museum of Natural History'. Some people believe his body should be in Nome, but Cleveland deserves Balto as they rescued him and his team mates and he lived there happily as a hero for the last years of his life. His fur is now faded from his original black. You can visit him and his exhibition still and even buy Balto merchindise in the gift shop! Here is the link if you want more information:
http://www.cmnh.org/site/Togo's Mount Togo was too mounted and can be found in the Iditarod Trail Museum in Wasilla, Alaska. It was first displayed in Vermont but a campaign brought Togo back to his original home state thankfully. Unfortunatly though, the mount is not in its best state.
Fritz Mount Fritz, one of Leonard Seppala's dogs from the Serum Run, has also been mounted and can be found at the "Carrie L. McLean Memorial Museum and Library" located in Nome.
