Bolt stretching

(Originally uploaded on my deviantART account on October 9, 2011.)

Original description:

Bolt is one of my favorite cartoon canines, so I decided to draw him. Here he is in my second deviation. I presume he's having a stretch on the red carpet! :D

I believe this is a big step forward from the first deviation. I was able to use GIMP to add colour and shadows. Shades aren't the best, but they really do stand out.

I hope you like my work. I would appreciate your favs and comments. Maybe some recommendations on future deviations could be helpful to me. Enjoy!

@BaltoSeppala, @MightyBalto1925: Thanks, I greatly appreciate your constructive criticism. I'll take these advices into consideration for my future drawings. ;)

If I may, I would also suggest pulling back on the fur. I understand you're trying to make Bolt look furry, though drawing hair like this makes something look wet, angered, or scared. Try to only define hair where it would be seen on the character.

Well, once again, I certainly mean no disrespect, nor any intentions of teasing you, but it is a look one might expect a 12 year old girl to draw. I remember that look distinctly from grade school art classes, and have seen it a lot in preteen girl fan artists online. So, to be perfectly honest, you might want to consider Mighty's advice, and perhaps that of other fan artists on Animation Source who have substantial experience because, if you've kept that same look since 2011, it's time to see your technique evolve.

When it comes to making something look more realistic, using simple shapes like this will never yield realistic results. I would suggest looking at real canine eyes, then practice drawing their shapes.

Here is a reference for a start: (which are eyes from a German Shepherd) http://imgc.allpostersimages.c [...] german-shepherd-dog-s-eyes.jpg

@BaltoSeppala: I guess it's a style choice I came up with since I started using deviantART back in 2011. I am trying to figure out ways to make eyes look more natural though.

May I ask a question? And I swear to you, I'm not setting you up or trying to be rude. I just want to understand one thing. Why are so many of the animals you draw perpetually wide-eyed and cross-eyed? I don't understand the repeated reliance upon that look.
