I watched that again to remind myself why I hated it. Yea I still hate it, don’t get me wrong.
BUT CAAAAAAT WHY DO YOU HATE THIS MOVIE!?!?!? IT’S ABOUT FRIENDSHIP AND THE ANIMATION WAS FLAWLESS. (Yeah, so flawless they resort to recycling their own animation from previous movies and even going so far as to playing animations IN THIS MOVIE in friggen REVERSE. By the way, you can thank Don Bluth for giving Todd the only few scenes he has emotion in.)
It was hardly about friendship. It was more about like every other Disney movie, where you don’t have to learn from your mistakes, so long as you didn’t have bad intentions at first.
They say that the book was about friendship and racism and stuff like that, and now, I’ve never read the book, but I didn’t get that vibe at all from this movie.
The animation, though more expensive-looking than Disney’s movies usually looked at the time, is /okay/. That’s about it. The backgrounds were different than what Disney’s usually looked like too, but they were still sloppily done in move scenes than I was comfortable with (when you’re picking out animation and background mistakes as a child, you’ve done something wrong with your movie.) The characters are complete garbage.
Todd: Our main character. Derived from a rather sadistic character that actually enjoyed giving Copper and the hunter a run for their money, is now your typical Gary Stu. A playful little Maverick when young, but when he grows up, he’s an emo little twit who gets a girlfriend for being such. The only mistake he makes is accidentally getting Chief hit by a train which in turn leads to the hunter wanting revenge on him. But he doesn’t learn from that, nope. Too late. Runs away alot and then you feel bad for him because he was never really against Copper ever? He’s supposed to learn that Copper is a killer and won’t be his friend no matter how hard he tries. Which turns out to be wrong. Yeah, point being, he doesn’t evolve as a character. Boring as heck.
Copper: And why don’t we get to see Copper’s experiences being taken away from his mother? We see Todd had a very sad beginning, what about Copper? Aww he gets a happy beginning. A new home and we’ll never know his mother and he’s forgotten all about her and— why am I going on about his mother? I never saw a mother, why should I give a care? Anyway, nothing really wrong with Copper at first, then he grows up. And “Yay look at me! I have a generic male voice! Growing up with hicks caused me to lose what little accent I already had!” Copper at the end realized that no matter what he was, he still had a deep connection (lawl) with Todd. So movie, stop pretending this movie is about Todd and make it about Copper please.
Amos: Really? You’re looking for revenge on a fox that broke your dog’s leg? Get over it. Seriously, the majority of this movie was him being all angryfaced because his dog BROKE HIS LEG!? People don’t have to die for this! You’ve illegally set traps everywhere, nearly got your head ripped off by a bear, and set a forest on fire (which, by the way, why was that never an issue in this movie?) BUT CAAAAAAT THIS MOVIE SHOWS THAT REVENGE ISN’T GOOD. People don’t want revenge for a broken leg! LET. IT. GO.
Widow Tweed: What? Just cuz you’re old and you don’t treat your cow like a companion I’m supposed to feel sorry for you for being lonely? My grandma has friends, why don’t you?
Chief: Yeah weren’t you supposed to die? I mean, I expect Disney not to follow the book, but um… yeah, you got hit by a train. Not only that but you hit your head on rocks all the way down an 800 foot mountainside, AND landed in a shallow rock-filled river. As a kid I was convinced you were dead. Sad, even. But Disney, you’re really stretching it making us kids go through all that crying and stuff just to reveal that Chief isn’t dead. Thus further reveals that it’s perfectly okay to want revenge on someone after they cause the broken leg of your loved one.
Vixie: Yeah, nice predictable name. You’re a fluzy and a perfect match for Todd. You’re both boring characters. How is she a fluzy, you ask? First off, for the sake of argument, let’s say that since these are technically anthropomorphic foxes (foxes with human characteristics) that they think and act like humans. Why the hell is Vixie thinking about having 6 kids with Todd, probably not even an hour after she learned his name? BUT CAT, THEY’RE FOXES, IT DOESN’T WORK THE SAME AS HUMANS!!! Yeah, exactly. Now I’m not an expert or anything, but I don’t think foxes think about having kits like humans do about children. They just mate first, ask questions later. Oh, and by the way,Todd’s later on shown with Vixie and you can clearly see their relationship has gotten no where since then.
Dinky and Boomer: Why were they in this movie? Well, I don’t mind that they were more interesting than the main characters. But the fact that they were around distracted me from remembering what movie I was even watching! I see them drag on this chase for this darn caterpillar for like 12 minutes and then the movie’s onto the actual plot. Wait, what was I watching again? Oh yeah. Sorry. I was more interested in finding out if/when they catch that bug. *sigh* I guess I’ll keep watching. By the way.

So yeah. The characters are crap. And when you have bad characters, you have a bad movie. Animation’s fine, characters are not. Except for Big Mama. She’s alright.
3/10 because the animation was okay and Copper wasn't all bad.
