Records

FilmWhen Frozen was released in theaters, many predicted that it would be a so-so film, on par with Tangled and Wreck-it Ralph. However, within a few weeks, Frozen began breaking box office records, and continued to do so for the next several months.

  • Over the weekend of January 3-5, 2014, Frozen was #1 at the North American box office. It was Frozen's seventh weekend in theaters. No movie had reached this feat since 2009's Avatar.
  •
  • Frozen became Disney's highest-grossing film on February 27, 2014, when it passed The Lion King's $987 million gross.
  •
  • On March 2, 2014, in its 101st day of release, Frozen passed $1 billion worldwide. It became only the 2nd animated film (after Toy Story 3) to do so, and the 18th film overall.
  •
  • On March 30, Frozen passed Toy Story 3 to become the highest-grossing animated film of all time.
  •
  • On April 25, Frozen passed the $400 million mark domestically. This marks it in the ranks of a "true" blockbuster. Only 18 other films passed that mark before, and of those, Frozen was just fifth original film to do so without the aid of a re-release, and the only original animated film.
  • Frozen's last day in theaters worldwide was August 31, 2014. It closed with a total gross of $1,275,325,369.

As well as being the highest-grossing animated film, Frozen is currently the

  • highest-grossing film with a female lead
  • highest-grossing film directed by a woman
  • highest-grossing musical
  • highest-grossing film of 2013
  • best-selling Blu-ray of all time
  • second highest-grossing non-franchise film
  • third highest-grossing film in Japan
  • fifth highest-grossing film of all time
  • nineteenth highest-grossing film in the United States

Frozen won two Oscars at the 2014 Academy Awards: Best Animated Film and Best Song, "Let It Go." This marked the first time since 1999 that Disney Animation won an Academy Award, the first time it won two in the same year since 1995's Pocahontas, and the first time Disney Animation received Best Animated FIlm. In addition to this, songwriter Robert Lopez became the youngest EGOT in history with his Oscar win. (An EGOT is a person who has won an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony. Lopez became only the 12th person in history to hold this distinction.)

When it was released on instant streaming, Frozen broke a record for most number of downloads for a children's film: over one million in the first 24 hours. It was released on DVD on March 14, and in its first 24 hours of release, it sold over 3.2 million copies--again, the most for any children's film.
