Disney and Pixar have struck gold once again with a new box office record, this time with the loveable, yet forgetful blue tang fish Dory! Pixar’s latest movie Finding Dory, the sequel to the 2003 Oscar-winning animated classic Finding Nemo, now officially holds the record for the biggest opening weekend for an animated feature!
Following it’s wide release last week on June 17th, Finding Dory set the record with a massive $136.2m on it’s domestic opening weekend. This significantly surpasses the previous record holder Shrek the Third, which made $121.6m on it’s first weekend back in 2007. Dory also hauled in $50m overseas from 29 countries, including a $17.5m debut in China, making it the best opening for a Pixar film in that country.
Critics and audiences worldwide have applauded Dory’s new adventure as the best Pixar follow-up since the Toy Story sequels, with it’s strong humour, visual beauty, and deep emotion. With the massive opening, Finding Dory will now stand as the new addition to Disney’s highly successful 2016 lineup alongside Zootopia, The Jungle Book, and Captain America: Civil War.
A big congratulations to director Andrew Stanton and the rest of the Pixar team for their amazing achievement!
