Princess And The Frog Source

Yes, there is a new Source site! Maybe not the one you expected (don't worry, the english version of Spirit Source is still on its way)
Nonetheless, this is an important one.

Why is Princess & The Frog important?

The main reason is simple : this upcoming film is Disney's comeback to traditional animation!

Let's remember : in 2003, Disney closed down their 2D animation department, deciding to stop making more "line drawn" animated films like their past glories from the 90's : The Lion King, Aladdin, Beauty & the Beast... That decision was based mainly on the fact that CGI films earned more at the time than their films (Brother Bear, Treasure Planet, ...), which lead to the release of films like Chicken Little, Meet the Robinsons, The Wild. (which, you'll admit, are anything but amazing) And not only Disney, but all the major companies stopped producing theatrical 2D films, which meant no more quality films like Balto or All Dogs Go To Heaven!

In 2006, Disney bought Pixar, in an attempt to gain more of the CGI market. Consequently, Ed Catmull and John Lasseter became lead of the animation departement, and decided to revive the tradition of Disney's hand-drawn animated films. And this is their first result!

In other words, if Princess & The Frog bombs at the box office, you can forget getting new 2D animated films for the next decade. We want to see more diversity, there is a place for all kinds of films (2D, CGI, stop motion) on the market! This is the film that will decide the fate of 2D animation, for the whole industry.

The film is directed by Ron Clements and John Musker, who previously worked on Aladdin, The Little Mermaid and Hercules. This means it's also a return to the musical style of films, which is something you might like or not, but is part of the tradition of Disney films and has been missing since a long time. By the way, it's also the longest 2D animated film made by Disney : 1 hour and 40 minutes! And rest assured : considering the rave reviews the film has been getting, it's already a classic!

The Princess & The Frog is set for a wide release on December 11th, 2009 in the USA, in theaters only!

I am not against the progress and all the new things, but I think there are things that should stay if it worths, probably Disney would alternate the animation style, I mean, alternate a 2D film with a 3D film, every film would have its chance to show up.

Personally, I wasn't going to see it...But after reading this, I will definitely consider seeing it in theatres. Because I think you're right, this may very well be just the break 2D animation needs. That, and maybe it'll be good, so why not?

Thanks for posting this Steet, you've changed my view point xD

I myself would love to see this movie!:p Besides, I think that traditionally animated films are more artistic in a way that CGI films aren't. Maybe this film will inspire more traditional animated films to be released, maybe a theatrically released Balto Film!:P Yeah, probably that won't happen anytime soon.

@Jcalamil Animated movie production is the most energy efficient of all in terms of big-budget films. CGI or 2D the environmental impact is not nearly as significant as live action films due to the fewer resources used, there are no large convoys of trailers and trucks with equipment and people. 2D animation is the last thing on the list in Hollywood to get reprimanded when it comes to being more environmentally friendly. Also this is Disney! they are a huge corporation that undoubtedly has to follow rules and regulations to lessen any negative impact of their endeavors.

Err...I honestly don't think that the amount of paper / cells to make an animated films is THAT important, and besides these are things they probably intend to keep, not recycle...

Using very high end computers for CGI films is probably less ecological because they require high amount of electricity, but still, what's that when compared to factories, industries?...

I need somebody responds honestly to this message: I think Disney should be "careful" when they go back to 2D animation even in theaters or animated TV series, what do I mean?, I mean, they should take all necessary to the enviroment conservation, they need to work "echologically" with 2D animation to avoid contamination, because of the paper or transparent cells, everything should be recyclable and biodegradable, we need to take care of our environment, which is one of the problems we have nowadays do you think this is a wise decision?;)

Bambi 2 was an overseas production, it was meant to be Direct To Video but they decided to give it a theatrical release.

In 2004 Home on the Range was released, in 2006 Bambi 2...
and then it stopped. It's great they made "Princess and the Frog". I haven't seen it, but I hope itąll bring back animated movies..
