Relation to the Lion King: Daughter of Kovu and Kiara

Wema was born at roughly the same time as Kabili, although to Kovu and Kiara. She loved her older brother Chimalsi and followed him around for a lot of the time. She would play almost all the time with Chimalsi, Kabili and Dafina. As Dafina was the only girl apart from Wema, the two of them would talk about boys together and topics such as that without any male company.

One day, when out playing in the Pridelands, a young cub called Ajali met them and they got into a great game of tag. Ajali was invited back round to Pride Rock and decided to live there. Wema could tell he had a problem with his parents; otherwise they would’ve come too.

That was the time of happiness. Wema didn’t hate Ajali, in fact she thought he was a great friend, but he a Dafina would spend all the time together so Wema could never have a private conversation with her friend. Chimalsi wanted Dafina to be his mate – Wema knew that – and now Dafina was with Ajali, Chimalsi would hide in Pride Rock. He wouldn’t talk to her and she was feeling upset. However, the thing that broke her heart was Kabili. She had begun to develop feelings for him.

A few days before she had decided she would tell him, Kabili was banished to the cave. Wema could see he was ill. He was thin and his eyes and nose kept running. However, a few days later she decided to tell him that she loved him.

She leapt up to the cave with a flower in her mouth. Coming out of it was Simba supporting a weak Kabili. The flower fell from her mouth as she ran over to ask what was wrong. Simba told her that Kabili was ill and that he was being taken to a cave in the Pridelands where he could get better.

But Kabili didn’t get better anytime soon. Wema visited him almost every day if he would allow her. She would call his name and he would reply whether he wanted to see her or not. Although Wema felt upset whenever he didn’t want to see her, she understood it was because he was too ill.

As she became a teenager, she began hunting with the hunting party. She had a natural talent for it, unlike her mother, and Vitani took her under her wing and helped her develop her skills. She would help provide the pride and Kabili with food.

However, when it came to her first solo hunt, Wema was nervous. She wanted to impress Vitani and not want to make a fool of herself.

Wema found a heard of gazelle. She knew what to do and her instincts took over. She brought down a young gazelle and was just about to take it back to Pride Rock when a clan of hyenas ambushed her.

“Why are you here? You fled when Simba became King. Why return?”

The hyenas stared at her, amazed by her bravery.

“We have heard from our prophet that a cub was to be born that would destroy the lions of Pride Rock. We have come to see that cub.”

Wema was astonished. A cub that would destroy Pride Rock! Was that one of her cubs? Or one of her friends? An enemy?

“Leave now! No one will destroy the lions of Pride Rock!”

“We’re not leaving without something in return. Come with us and we can train you to kill, or bring one of your friends.”

“Never!”

That was when the hyenas attacked. Wema was never a strong fighter, she was more of a hunter, but she fought back. The struggle lasted a long time and when it ended Wema was covered in scratches and bites, dripping blood. The hyenas backed off.

“No one will destroy Pride Rock!” she yelled before collapsing.

Her cry brought Kovu and Kiara down to where she lay. They supported her and helped her back to Pride Rock.

When Wema became fully conscience once more she told everyone about the hyena attack. However, she wouldn't mention what the hyenas had told her about the destroyer of Pride Rock. When Kovu and Kiara asked her what she meant by ‘No one will destroy Pride Rock’, she just said she wouldn’t let the hyenas take over again.

Wema was emotionally drained. Her thoughts wouldn’t leave the destroyer of Pride Rock or the way Kabili would react to the fact she wasn’t pretty any more. But what hurt her most was the limp.

Wema had developed a limp from the attack and so wasn’t able to hunt any more. She couldn’t do what she loved the most.

One thing, however, had cheered her up. Chimalsi was happy again. Ajali had found him a mate and Nabii was absolutely lovely. She was great fun to be around and would often have Wema in fits of laughter.

But Wema never felt entirely happy until she was a young adult. Kabili got better.

The day he returned was one of the happiest of her life. She stood at the top of Pride Rock with Kopa. He walked right up to her and whispered in her ear the words she most wanted to hear.

“I love you!”
