Lion King 3D Tops Box Office

Written by SkulShurtugalTCG :

As this weekend at the box office proved, The Lion King  still has the magic, even after seventeen years. The film was re-released in 3D, and topped the domestic box office. Early estimates placed the film as having grossed at least $29,300,000 by the end of its beginning weekend, making The Lion King now the seventeenth highest-grossing film in the US, and the 28th highest-grossing film worldwide of all time.

This weekend marked the first time since the re-release of Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi that a re-released film has grossed the most money in any weekend. That was 14 years ago. Many critics attribute this achievement to both the film's popularity, and the fact that it is a traditional-animated film.

What does this mean? It means, simply, that there is hope for animation after all. With so many people willing to spend time and money to see a film they've probably seen hundreds of times, it shows that they are perhaps willing to see a brand-new film of the same quality as well. As of right now, Disney is actually considering going back to traditionally-animated films, at least part-time, due to The Lion King 3D's success.

This is the first time a traditionally animated film has been converted to 3D for any media. The 3DVD and 3D Blu-ray wilil be released mid-October.

If you want to see the film, hurry! It will be pulled out of theaters after September 29.

IDMb reported that 'Lion' remains 'King', in other words Lion King remained on top of the Box Office on the second week with approximately 22 million dollars. This proves, without a doubt, that true quality movies will never loose their spark. If you're interested, check out IMdb's website for the full report.

At least 90% of the theatre I went to knew the movie, needless to say how packed it was at an early after-school show time (4:15). Mom's with kids, after-school teenagers, early to late 20-30's something's, it's no surprise. When musical numbers show up, we'd all sing-a-long at a tolerable level, word for word to the lyrics we'll never forget.

O ya, we all clapped in the end and stayed behind in the credits. everyone was left talking among themselves or stayed zoned to the credits. This magic of The Lion King lives on.

I wish it was released here in Europe.

I'll also add this is TWICE as much money as Toy Story 1 & 2 re-release (take that, CGI! lol ) even though the 3D craze is supposed to be over! I'm betting most people went to see the film itself, not really for the 3D gimmick.

For once, a good news for the traditional animation...Now I think Disney will re-release other 2D classics (with 3D effect), it would be silly for them to not exploit this goldmine...

As for new 2D films, that's another story; but at least it's a step in the right direction.
