Schroeder :
Hope you'll indulge me in another question.
For a small while, in the "Chip 'N' Dale's Rescue Rangers" messageboard (The Acorn Caf?), the Rescue Rangers fans in that community had a dialogue with Tad Stones, who supervised CDRR as you did TS, largely as one member of the board works as a post-production assistant for Tad's Hellboy productions and gets to see him from time to time.
I was under the impression, after reading his answers, that Tad put in certain plot points at least partially to move things along in the script, either comedically or dramatically, without ever really intending to further those plot points more than need be to do the job. Or to find ways to get "fresh gags" and "avoid clich?s whenever possible".
These points run the gamut from what happened to Gadget's parents, why do her recipes taste like machine oil, what happened to Monterey and Gadget's dad, what relationship does Chip and Dale share, etc. Same kind of speculation as with TaleSpin. (Dsney loves to orphan its characters, don't they?! ;))
Of course, not only are these plot points often taken a lot more seriously than were intended, but there doesn't seem to be a definite answer to such things.
My questions are, what's your take on overspeculation, and was your take on writing TS similar to Tad's in CDRR?! :)
(Not to get you or him in trouble or upset either of you--was just wondering.)
Jymn Magon :
No, this wouldn't upset Tad. Since he and I were in similar situations (we would rotate from development to production, the back to development), we were always swamped. So when someone asks, "Why did Gadget do this?" or "When did Baloo do that?" - we really don't have definitive answers. Now, if the question came up in a specific script, then we would think up an answer - then it would be locked in stone. But if certain questions never came up, we never answered them. So that's why the fans want to fill in the gaps. Tad speaks the truth -- we do what we need to do to get the series done on time. It's kind of like jumping from rock to rock to get across a river... you've skipped over a lot of stuff, but yer glad you got to the other side without getting soaked.
Tad came aboard at TV animation while I was doing Gummi Bears... and he eventually took over the 3rd season, as I remember. We actually were developing Rescue Rangers together for a while, but once it got green lit, he took over. That was his baby. While he was working on that, I was developing B Players & Tale Spin. So we were always in close contact, but usually working on different projects.

Thanks again, Jymn! I always kind of suspected that would be the case. "Why would _______?" Because it wouldn't be a show! I keep thinking, for example, of the TS episode, "Double Or Nothing". Why would Baloo be that obsessed, that careless, that thoughtless and reckless to keep bartering and trading Kit's hard-earned money in every nation he goes to, in more ridiculous ways, in spite of Kit's protests and the wrath of Trader Moe?! Because it's funny and amusing, and it wouldn't be a show otherwise!! The entertainment is in seeing how far Baloo can go and what he can get away with, and in seeing how exasperated Kit gets at the whole situation. Another good example is in "Vowel Play"; seeing all the ways in which Baloo can mess up proper spelling while skywriting, even when given (and taped, glued and stapled!) proper and important instructions by Detective Thursday and Rebecca. It also adds a sense of suspense as the sure-thing plans go haywire and Baloo must rely on luck and Kit's lessons to save the day. ![]() |
