TaleSpin, Super Baloo?

Date : May 31, 2011

Category : Default / Other

Question :

I've noticed the France version of TaleSpin was called "Super Baloo", it interested me and made me wonder about two things:

1.) What is the reason behind different countries and versions of the same show having different names/titles?

2.) What is TaleSpin called in all the other countries?

Best answer :
I think in Germany it was called "Der Flederbear" or "Eine Kleine Nachte Flyin." The French title was "Oh, contraire, Dumb Bear!" Spain: "Yo soy un flyboy sincero." In Australia: "Oi" or "Crikey!" (can't remember which). In Russia it was, "Thembria is better Than Louie's Place" Poland: "Give my Regards to Broadwyzchstwctzk!" Belgium: "Not the Smurfs" And finally in Granada Hills, California: "Hey, look, Daddy's show is on!"

TaleSpin is a pun on Tailspin, meaning, you're losing the controll of your plane. For obvious reasons they choosen TaleSpin because children should recognize the show with an airplane as theme. And you cannot translate that worthplay into different countries because they don't have such a word in the vocabular or use it for a different meaning.

For example, the german title of the show is "Kpt'n Balu und seine tollkhne Crew" (Captain Baloo and his daredevilish crew), a sort of rhyme. Most localizations try their best to keep to stay to close to the original meaining of the series.

In Latin America, TaleSpin was know as "Aventureros del Aire" (Adventurer of the Air), The spanish version was dubbed in Mexico and transmitted by Televisa from 1993(?) to 1997, and later to Disney Channel Latin America at the beggining 2000. I think in Spain played the Latin American version, but the audio sounded high-pitched. (I'm not really sure)

EDIT: The Latin American version has another title "Cuentos Areos", which means "Spinning Tales" or "Aerial Tales", was only for VHS covers.

I'm not sure Jymn will be able to answer this.

I'm french, so I think the reason they did it was to capitalize on the popularity of the character. Here in France, The Jungle Book is the Disney film which sold the most theaters tickets in the whole history of Disney. Everyone knows Baloo.

But honestly, that's an awful name for the series, it sounds very "childish". And everything they've done with the french dubbing is awful and childish as well - they literally ruined it.

TaleSpin is also called "Super Baloo" in poland I think, and I know it's called "Looping" in Canada, "Aventureros del aire" in Spain... I've seen somewhere on Gregory Weagle's site a list of the titles in different countries. For most countries, it's TaleSpin though.
