Well, in my opinion, as someone who only has read the first book and watched the whole series, I think the series are better (I also read the book after watching the series, so it makes a big difference). I think the series are better because they bring more emotion to the story, and following the story by the series is much easier (like, understanding the characters and what is going on). It's your choice, but I recommend watching the series first
