Dixie is similar to the Pom and the longhaired Chi, but more so to the
Pom. Note that not every single Pom in the world is always quite "THAT fluffy." Ha ha. Sorry, I see what you meant and I'm not saying you're totally wrong, but, Dixie is more like a less-poofed-up Pom than a Chihuahua of any sort. And they're usually *less* fluffed than her--the other direction. She could easily be some cross between the two breeds, but on the WHOLE, she has the Spitziness, coat type, ears, etc...everything that suggests "Pomeranian!" (cartoon), rather than "Chihuahua!" (cartoon.) If you get what I mean..?

Sooo...verdict? If Dixie is any part Chihuahua, it's just that--a part. She's mostly (or all) Pomeranian. Riley made several good points: the fact that her owners may groom her any way they please (not that being well groomed has anything to do with being un-fluffy, but I get what was meant about her possible 'distinct cut'), her small ears, her mop of hair on top of her head. Not to mention the all-important simple artistic license--you MUST realize how much of that there is in every single animated film. And that's a wonderful thing! Sure, it makes identifying the characters in terms of real-life animals a little more challenging (but still a fun, non-serious activity!) But in light of that, it's easy to see that Dix is a Pom. I also liked Cobalt's remark; I'm not really buying the idea of her being a Chi for the same reasons. If they'd aimed for the Chihuahua look, you'd know right away. She wouldn't be as fluffy/poofy and would have large ears, & basically look a bit different. But again, the Bichon guess was slightly off, too. Pomeranian is about the best you can do--but as always, being safe and slapping "mix" on there works just fine and acknowledges the possibility of other, modifying breeds having been somewhere in the family tree! Sure, Dixie seems like the type to pride herself on being a purebred, but meh...there's nothing to say she definitely is one...;)

Hmm, now why am I repeating myself on a thing so old anyhow...? I'm not even bored right now..! *gasp* *runs away*Ehhhh...Dixie could be a Pomeranian/Long-haired Chihuahua
mix. But I think she is more like a Pom. When you look at
her, you just think Pom. She doesn't say "Chihuahua" as
much. Not all Poms are THAT fluffy, you know, and they probably just chose to draw her less 'round' & thick-coated because, they wanted to. ^_~ I'm not
saying she doesn't look at all like a long-haired Chi. But I'd
stick with Pomeranian more. Not that this MATTERS, she's just a small fluffy dog, that's what counts.

To whomever said
she's fat, or a spaniel, that is SO untrue! XD She isn't fat
at all! It's all poofy hair. And spaniel? Erm...not
likely. Pomeranian is the best answer. Or Pom/Chi mix.
Pupmagenheimer is EXACTLY right. Animation nearly ALWAYS
equals exaggeration. They might look at some real dogs for
inspiration, but they can design and draw whatever they
please. Dixie is WAY more likely to be a
slightly-less-fluffy Pom than a more-fluffy Chihuahua. She's
just built more like one. She'd probably be different if we
were supposed to think Chihuahua for her. There are many reasons--her ears, head-poof, size, etc.

I
also agree with Riley. Anyway, I've already said what I
think about Angel from Lady & the Tramp 2 being a Pomeranian
(that she's not a pure one because she's a puppy, and will probably get
bigger)--but yeah, it's the same idea. She's sometimes
thought to be one because they based her puppy look on the
breed, but she too is "not sooo fluffy." Two words--artistic
license. We can't be so...exacting with breeds of animated
dogs, it doesn't work. And anyhow, Bichon Frise isn't a terrible
guess because it's the same type of thing--small, fluffy toy
dogs. Pomeranian is a lot better. But they're all close.

As for Kirby...oh my, I just don't care. XDD Akita,
Husky, whatever. He's somewhere in between, like most of
them. They probably didn't care either; they just wanted
another spitz dog who didn't look exactly like the rest..O.o

Actually Akitas were origanally for a guard dog, their owners desided
to make them fight they were then breed to fight because of the
popularity of the sport, even though it was cruel. Also my friend has
4 Akitas that are all trained to be Swing dogs and Lead dogs and or
Team dogs, yes they even race

Also, Akitas aren't sled-dogs. I read in a book that they were used
for pit-fights.

Wow! Dixie does look like a long-coated chiuaua! On the other hand
about Ralph, I don't think he's an Akita. Yes he does look like the
picture but the animation wasn't that good in Balto 3 so maybe Kirby
just was a husky messed up by sequal animation. I have a friend who
has an Akita and it doesn't really look that much like him (probably
mostly because he's a puppy.) I think that Akita's coiled tails are
more noiticable than huskies' and if he were an Akita, they would have
atleast gave him a coiled tail.

Ok, look not to burst anyones bubble but, I don't think the
artists meant for Dixie to belong to any breed. It's called
"imagination" the artists wanted to make Dixie floofy and
small because it matches her character.

Eeeep, please, next time, lay off the capitals. It makes
Cobaltia cry.

I seriously don't think that
Dixie is a long hair chihuahua. Her coat and tail is a lot
fluffer, and her ears are smaller. I always thought she
was... well, it was something along the lines of Bichon, but
whatever.

And Akitas don't pull sleds .

Well, I always thought that Kirby was a descendent from dire
wolves, but an akita is more likely (but odly some fanfic
writers still insist that is an husky).

Uh, nice article, but (censored) udge did you do it in all caps?
another thing, who really cares? we all enjoy the
breeds, and the animators most likely BASED them off certain
breeds. Its more fun that way

about the Dixie thing, remember that she is a pet to a very wealthy person, which means that she is probably very well groomed, and may have a distinct cut, which could be why she isnt so fluffy. also, chihuauhas have HUGE ears popping out of their heads, and Dixie doesnt. hers are kinda smallish. AND also, she has a huge mop of fur on her head just like pomeranians do, and chiuahuas surely don't.

As fir Kirby, i suppose he could be an akita...his face certainly does look like one, but i'm still skeptical. I volunteer at an animal shelter, and i've played with some of their akita's before, and they are HUGE. About twice the size of their siberian huskies, and although both Kirby and Ralph are bulkier, they are only about an inch or twoo taller than the others.
