Dixie

She probably isn't pure bred

Olivia_loves_Link :

I believe Dixie is a mixed breed. She doesn't have solid features. Her haircut is not a pomeranian or a chihuahua style, and also, chihuahuas are from Mexico-what would a Mexican breed be doing in Alaska? And also, Alaska is rather frontier. Usually the only pure bred dogs other than huskies and malamutes were owned by rather rich people. So, I think Dixie is indeed, a mixed breed. The same goes for Doc.

Okay, Chiuahuahs are bred to live in hot climates, not cold so it would be difficult ofr Dizie to live with the snow right? And even long haired chis are not as poofy as Dixie, she mostly resembles either a Shiba Inu, but the issue in that one is that Shiba Inus dont come in awhite or grey. Some say a Pommie, which I agree but maybe mixed with something else? But ofcourse when weare looking for a resmblence between pictures of different breeds of dogs and Dixie we always look fro her poofy spunk without even relizing, so maybe thats what is messing us up with this?
But here is the link to the pic that I found that make me belive that Dixie is a Pommi mix!

I agree, but think of it: Mexico is hot and Alaska is cold. If
Chihuahuas are bred with abilities to survive in hot weather, It
doesn't make much sense for them to be in freezing weather. Does it?
Please correct me if I'm wrong. Cuz this kind of confuses me.

i agree with pupmagenheimer finaly someone says that they aren't a
friggen purebreed!!!!! *so happy* I think she's a bichon and a
pomeranian-chihuahua mix. But when you said "what would a mexican
breed be doing in alaska?" it kinda threw me off. Dogs don't only live
in the place where they originated. still, great article.

Precisely, graywolf....they may be based on real dogs of one
or more breeds, but of course no real dogs ever look exactly
like the cartoons, so why worry so much about it? I think of her as a Pomeranian, it's the best bet, but could she be mixed? Absolutely. Her haircut is enough like "a Pom style," Olivia_loves_Link. It's also fairly similar to a Chi. And the whole Alaska thing...we've said why that shouldn't be included in a case for what breed she could be...I'm sure there were other purebreds even at that time. Anyway I gather that her owners are probably among the richest citizens of Nome in the movie. (Relatively of course--not that they're positively loaded!)

Of course Chihuahuas can (and do) live in cold places. (They're
everywhere, !) Seriously, you can find most breeds in most places,
regardless of where they were originally bred or why. A Chi would need
to be cared for accordingly in freezing weather, of course, but
yeah..

Anyway, Dixie's a Pomeranian, in all
likelihood--not a Bichon (those are drop-eared, non-Spitzy little dogs), but very possibly a cross of Pom with
long-haired Chi, which also resembles her. Though not QUITE as well as
the Pom.

Dix could be a mix or easily a pure Pom. She acts kinda prissy and purebred-like; I think of her
as a Pomeranian or Pom mix. Pom crossed with a long-haired
Chihuahua makes a TON of sense. She is *not* a Lhasa Apso;
they look almost nothing like her, though they are small. Yorkie neither--she's obviously not one of the long, straight, silky-coated toy dogs. And her color is unrealistic, but who cares? I love it.
Oh, and a breed's country of origin has ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do with where any particular dog lives. O_o

What else...Doc doesn't really look like a St. Bernard. But it's close enough. We don't really KNOW that "rich" people own Dixie...you just get the impression that they are pretty well off, especially with a daughter away at a boarding school and Dix's fancy new collar. Anyway, again it IS possible that she's a purebred, and it is possible she's a mix. I understand the "well she's not quite as fluffy all over as a Pomeranian so she must be a long-haired Chi" thing, but many Poms are deliberately fluffed and puffed up extra-poofy for photos. They're not all always that much so. Dixie definitely looks more like one than anything else--but again, Chihuahua is very close too. Heck, it's a cartoon film, what do you expect? ^^

hm, good point. who says that we have to pinpoint only one
breed per character. whose to say they're all purebred? most
of them could be mixed of many. maybe more than two in some
cases. then again, mixed breeding was usually reserved the
working class of dogs to gain strength on the teams. then
again, Dixie seems like a show dog so she might be a
purebred... perhaps we will never know for sure. until then,
keep those ideas coming great job!

Well, its a cartoon so no one looked at logic wile they were
making it. They just said something like "Hey, lets make a
small cute dog that has a crush on Steele" They didn't care
where chihuahuas were from. But I think its quite clear that
shes a Chihuahua becasue Poms have fully fluffy bodies wile
Chihuahuas (like dixie) Don't nessisaraly. the pom trait she
has is that her ears are small. She might be a mixbreed, but
I'm practicly an expert on Chihuahuas. I had one and I
reserched the for a LONG time. Dixie may not be a pure bred
Chihuahua, but she DEFINATKY has some Chihuahua in her^^
