Biography -
From the start, Archie was an easygoing dog. He obeyed his first owner, his breeder and minded his parents. Of course he caused trouble with his siblings, but he was more content in exploring the yard than tussling with his siblings. He also had a passion for running; his home was close to where sled teams would pass through, and he'd often pretend he was on a sled team. None of his other siblings did this, and when they did it was often to poke fun at him. Archie's parents were not amused by this, and encouraged their son to follow his dreams. The breeder that owned him knew another breeder who specialized more in race dogs and as soon as Archie was old enough, he was sent there.
The older dogs at this new kennel took notice of the pup and took him under their wings. They looked after him, made sure he stayed out of trouble and that nobody caused trouble for him. A few even helped to train the aspiring young racer, giving him pointers and even extended training sessions. Needless to say, they became very close knit, like a family. When Archie was old enough to be put into a harness, the whole group was ecstatic. Unfortunately, they were not aware that they were all for sale, and as they travelled from town to town many mushers were taking notice of the youngest member of the team. However, nobody purchased the grey husky until the team travelled to Fairbanks. A young, determined musher was assembling a sled team, and was looking for dogs with more mellow dispositions to hopefully tame the unruly lead dog. When Archie was purchased, it was of course a sad moment for not only himself, but for the rest of the team. They'd become his fost family, and promised to stay in touch. This was not much of a consolation for Archie. Once in the musher's possession, he came face to face with a black husky, not much older than himself. The husky said nothing, only stared, but had a smirk plain as day on his face. For the first time in his life, Archie felt anger boil his blood. He couldn't believe that he'd have to work with this piece of work.
However, after working with the team, Archie despised the lead dog, Chase, a little less. Chase was a difficult dog, but he was unlike any other dogs Archie had met before. Whereas others were steadfast, loyal, and kind Chase was rather flighty and did what he wanted to. For whatever reason, the two became friends, even though Archie disapproved of much of Chase's lifestyle. The team trained together for only a few weeks before taking on their first team. This would be the ultimate test for them, and despite some difficulties, they passed with flying colors. From this point on, they skyrocketed across Alaska, being pulled around rampantly by Chase with some stability from Archie. Wherever they went, they tended to attract attention, and for Archie that meant females. However, he wasn't interested. As a pup he'd pictured himself settling down one day, but now that he was a sled dog he wouldn't have time for a family and often just slunk away to the kennels as the rest of his team often took advantadge of this. Chase, to Archie's shock, stayed away from this as well. The two would often swap stories in their down time, and in these periods Archie felt like he could find something to trust in Chase. Most of the time, it was just blind faith and a harness that connected the two.
After a few seasons of racing, a new promotional race was introduced. The winner would recieve a substantial cash sum, and a golden collar. The team was entered, and actually considered to be underdogs; something they hadn't been called since the begining. The race was long, hard, and filled with cheating teams, but after some time, it was clear they'd be the winners. After recieving the collar, Archie expected a change in Chase. Based on the lead dog's personality thus far, he'd expected that it would only get worse. Instead, it stayed the same and Archie gaine a newfound appreciation for the husky.
This was altered when, upon returning to Fairbanks after a series of races Chase came back to the kennels one day with a irritated look on his face. When the team questioned him about this, he mentioned that he had a family here, and things weren't going so great and that he was planning on leaving them. Archie was dismayed and angry at this, but not surprised. When Chase explained that he thought having himself out of the picture for the two, Archie was a little less miffed. Nobody brought it up again, until Archie saw a pup escorting Chase to a race one morning. From where he stood, he could see that Chase was indeed, trying to distance himself from him. The pup left in a huff, and Chase strode up to Archie, and the rest of the team. From that point on, Archie tried to mention Chase's family as much as he could, to get a message to the husky, but nothing really came from it and Archie eventaully just let it go. Besides, there was no time to bicker in the team while they were defending their title in nearly every race they were in.
This life ended horribly on one fateful run. It was in late winter, and it would be one of the team's last practice runs before the season ended. In the middle of their run, a mile or so out of Fairbanks, the team encountered a bear that wasn't too thrilled to see them. In the initial charge, Archie was struck, and Chase's harness had been slashed. Winded and injured, Archie called to his friend for help only to watch in horror as the black husky ran in the other direction, leaving Archie and the rest of the team for dead. As the bear attacked Archie again, half of his vision turned to black. In shock, Archie managed to run to shelter, and could only watch as other team members were attacked by the bear. This shock remained as he saw Chase return, and actually engage the bear in a fight. The remaining team was able to run back to Fairbanks, and Archie and Chase were left with the bear. Chase put up quite the fight, but ultimately he lay motionless as the bear lumbered off. Archie summoned all of his strength and stumbled down to where the black husky lay, and stayed with him until he passed.
After the team returned, Archie was basically left alone. He was of no use to any sort of sled team, he was now blinded in one eye and was considered a liability. The rest of the team promised to stay in touch, but as his mentors before them, they didn't. Archie managed to keep tabs on them though, and in his time alone he began to understand his former life, and those in it more. He became the town's story-teller, living in the old team's now deserted kennels, and told anyone that would listen the story of what he'd once been a part of.
Other -
- Archie was never intersted in having a family. He figured he wouldn't be around enough to start one, so he never sought it out.
- Archie, like Chase, specialized in speed. While he was not as fast as Chase, he did have more stamina.
- Most of the anger and stress in Archie's life was caused by Chase.
- Archie is the last surviving member of his sled team, and due to this he "keeps them alive" by telling others their story.
- Archie and Chase did not get along very well when Chase was still alive. They were close friends, but Archie couldn't stand Chase's lifestyle. This changed after Chase's death and Archie was able to process the past years of his life.
Relation to Balto - Was formerly owned by Steele's musher, and ended up telling Steele the story of Chase (and the golden collar). He was also the best friend of Chase, who is the grandfather of Jenna.
