Build, Appearance and Height: is 60cm high at the withers (adult height); slender but sturdy build - conformations of head and body similar to those of an East Siberian Laika; holds tail, which is quite thickly furred low, as a wolf does

Fur Colours: shades of grey, brown and black

Markings: dark legs and ears; lighter muzzle; brown triangular patch on each cheek close to ears

Personality: Melle is an optimistic soul, a curious character with a nose for adventure. Kindly, thoughtful Melle looks out for her near and dear, ever understanding. She tries see the good in most individuals.

Habits: Melle covers any animal she kills with snow, grass or leaves (to hide them from ''sensitive souls'') - a habit which has stayed with her since she worked at Nome harbour, and did the same thing with dead rats.

Background: Is the daughter of Torin - a dog with champion sled race dog ancestry from Russia - and Roxle, a half-tame Alaskan wolf. Melle was born the youngest of four.

History:

Melle's mother Roxle picked a spot on the Alaskan coastline not far south-eastwards from the town of Nome; on this chosen area of beach she made a den in preparation for the birth of her first litter. The pups Avan, Fanee, Springer and Melle were later born, on April 21st in the year 1928.

Melle was three months old when Roxle decided to move home with her offspring . The reason for this was that their coastal den was situated very near a clutch of old buildings, which had at first been uninhabited, but humans had begun to move into them during Melle's first summer. It was not the people themselves who were a worry; the dogs they brought with them were the threat. Melle was once set upon by one particularly vicious hound called Pavor, but fortunately her mother was around to save her. So, to avoid further trouble Roxle took her son and daughters Springer, Fanee and Melle (Avan had mysteriously disappeared shortly after Pavor's attack) to Nome, where the pups' father Torin lived and worked. Torin's owner, Reverend Alek, allowed Roxle and her offspring to make a new home of his backyard and a den of his woodshed. 

The Mr Alek's yard was substantially fenced and the only way out of it, for dog or wolf, was to jump out. Until she was fully grown, and therefore big enough to clear the fence, Melle and her siblings were confined. Thus confined, they related only to their mother Roxle, their paternal grandparents Urry and Akina, and sometimes their father who visited now and again. And because Roxle tended to speak in her native language of Inuit, and their grandparents and father with a Russian brogue, Melle, Springer and Fannee naturally picked up an accent which remained for the rest of their lives.

When she was older, and had managed to leap Mr Alek's yard fence, Melle went to live and work with her father at Nome harbour. Torin worked as a ratter, killing the rats that populated the docks. Overjoyed at having his own daughter working with him,  he taught Melle all the hunting tricks he knew.  Under her father's guidance Melle became an ace ratter (even though she had some odd habits, such as covering the rats she killed with rags to hide them from ''sensitive souls'') and she grew to be known as Ratter II (her father being Ratter I). Torin's friends - Balto, Muk, Luk, the goose Boris and the harbour workers - became Melle's friends also. She was closest to Boris; calling him her 'Dyadya' (''uncle'' in Russian), Melle liked looking after and out for the elderly goose, taking care of him well into his final years until he passed away.

After a host of little and large adventures (including some exciting ones on the high seas - she'd been allowed to join many an ocean voyage), Melle decided it was time to start a family. She left her job working at the harbour to live a short way out of town, joining her half-wild, ex-sled dog mate Koltav to live on territory known as Brook Song. With Koltav, Melle had three children; Narrah, Norceen and Kelle.
