On the way he meets a mountaineer who is kind enough to give Ros shelter and food. The man also owns many dogs, one whom is an elderly dog called Polo, who befriends Ros.

 The mountaineer wishers to climb Mount Grizzly after a bet he made with a man in a nearby town. He needs the money desperately after suffering a bad harvest. But, unluckily, while attempting to climb it, he then falls and breaks his shoulder and leg.

Ros, wishing to repay the man's kindness, climbs the mountain for him instead.
