Personality: Roscoe is a thrill-seeker. When faced with a decision, he acts impulsively (and somewhat recklessly) before he thinks about it. Somehow he always manages to make it through, but not without a few scrapes. He's street-smart, risky, but soft-hearted. It doesn't take him long to fall in love with Aniu after his prejudice against wolves melts away. Everyone likes Roscoe, his good humor, and the fact that he's fun-loving and not afraid to get into trouble to make people laugh. He becomes a little more serious after he meets Aniu.

History: In short, Roscoe is Balto's father, who by betrayal and heartbreak falls in love with Aniu. It began when Roscoe was lead dog of the mail team, and a storm brushed across the Alaskan tundra during a routine mail run. Unintentionally, Roscoe led the team straight toward a mother polar bear and her young (Muk and Luk). Through a lot of chaos and confusion, Roscoe manages to lead the bears away from the team, but his plan to escape falls through, and he is wounded.

Meanwhile, Aniu's mother, leader of all the wolf clans, has recently died, leaving Aniu with the decision to lead or turn down the position. Confused and unsure whether this is the path that she wants to take, Aniu agrees to allow her brother Nava to assume her position while she goes on a "vision quest" to find answers. During her quest, she locates Roscoe wounded and takes him to a cave where he recovers.

At first they are hostile to one another, both harboring prejudices against each other's race. Eventually, they come to terms and Aniu helps Roscoe recover. During that brief interval, they become friends. Roscoe reluctantly returns to his own kind when he heals, but he cannot forget Aniu. Against the wishes of his friends, he meets with Aniu, nurturing the feelings they have for one another.

When Tonrar, Roscoe's best friend (and Steele's father) gets wind that Roscoe's secret relationship is with a wolf, he is livid. Through many hardships, Roscoe comes to the point of decision: to choose between remaining lead dog and living out the life that others expect of him, a life he has always known...and a new life with Aniu, a love that is totally forbidden and dangerous. Well, being Roscoe, he picks danger.

The end is tragic, where Tonrar, enraged to the point of madness, sends off a hunting party of dogs after Roscoe and Aniu with means to kill them both. By this time, Roscoe and Aniu have two pups who have just been weaned. Roscoe leads the dogs off to save his family and is killed. Aniu, realizing long ago that her place is with her own, knows that the pups cannot go with her. They are split up, Balto going to Boris.
