Is 2017 the comeback year of Balto? Not only did we get the first movie released on US Netflix (plus the sequels), and a review by the Nostalgia Critic, but then came another unexpected surprise. Right out of nowhere, Balto has finally been given a long-awaited Blu-ray release from Universal Pictures Home Entertainment!

The Blu-ray, sold as a Wal-Mart exclusive, brings our favourite heroic wolf-dog to crystal-clear 1080p widescreen and DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 (English only). Included in the Balto Blu-ray are audio and subtitle options for English, German, Danish, Finnish, Norwegian, and Swedish.
Unfortunately, there are no special features present on the disc. But the good news is that the release is region-free, so it should work on any Blu-ray player. Those living outside North America will be able to import and play this Blu-ray with no problem.

The Blu-ray release of Balto was first reported in this Blu-ray.com forum thread, which also showed that another Amblimation film, An American Tail: Fievel Goes West, also got released on that format at the same time. This officially completes the Amblimation Blu-ray collection (We’re Back! A Dinosaur’s Story got it’s Blu-ray release in November 2015).
As of now, the Blu-ray is exclusively sold at Wal-Mart, so there’s no listings of it on eBay or Amazon just yet. But if you’re able to get your hands (or paws) on this, it’s a must-buy for Balto fans! More details on the Blu-ray are on the Blu-ray.com entry. Unbelievable!  After all these years, it's finally happening!I'm disappointed to see it's a "minimal" release though. Limited to one store, same cover as the DVD (...I mean, really?! Couldn't they do better?), no special feature, and picture quality doesn't look it's been restored. Still a good news to finally have it available in HD glory. |

I was getting ready to post a fan-news about it and turns out you
finished yours before mine. Anyways, I'm glad that Universal has
finally taken initiative! At last, the release that we've all been
waiting for! I simply cannot believe that our beloved movie is now
getting a Widescreen release for the very first time in North America
since the Laserdisc era! However, it is currently impossible to specify if the Blu-ray includes a remastered or a simple upscaled version of the movie. I guess we'll have to wait for some official reviews! |
