Historical facts on Balto udated

Written by Mighty :

If any of you remember the page I made awhile back on the true facts of Balto, I have since revamped the page completely. What I originally had there was minimal, and I felt that the page would be more complete if I included actual information on Balto verses just laying down a few random facts. You can view the page by clicking here.

This is all the page included originally:

The truth about Balto

Balto's breed:

A lot of people argue that Balto is part wolf due to the the animated movie. That's not the case, Balto never was part wolf. He was 100% Siberian Husky.

Balto's color:

Like a lot of you, you've seen the pictures, or perhaps even went to the Cleveland museum yourself. What you see is a brown dog. Then you think "Wrong! Balto wasn't black! He's brown!" WRONG. Balto was never brown to begin with. The bright lights from the museum faded Balto's fur over time from black to the brown we now see.

Check out these links on the colors of Siberian Huskies:

Comparison:

As you can see, the photo to the left is far more dark than the one to the right. If Balto were to be brown he would look like that in all of his photos.

Offspring:
Balto never had any pups. Leonhard Seppala considered Balto to be a scrub (meaning inferior or slow-working dog) dog for being barrel chested, and therefore was netured at 6 months of age. Also, due to these facts, Balto was used for bringing supplies to gold miners.

His mount wasn't under low light conditions when I visited the Cleveland museum a few years ago. In fact between the natural and electric lighting he was in a bad place to be considering how faded his pelt is. Not to mention the location of the mount being in a place where you practically had to search for him just to see what little exhibit they had to begin with.

Despite the mount's fur being faded, I don't see a reason for it to be "replaced". And Balto's mount is now under low-light conditions and is in a glass case... He is as protected as he can be.

Too true. Could they perhaps make a replica of it and put that on display with the original in storage where it could be better protected? I understand they often do that with dinosaur bones, and I once saw a replica of a dodo so good that it looked real (and they hadn't even used actual dodo feathers; they substituted chicken ones instead). Just an idea.

O' Cap'n My Cap'n!
If you consider the terrible job done of "restoring" Togo's mount, after the vast amounts of damage IT suffered, this should not be so surprising. Though I am sure the museum is concerned about how any such effort would affect the fur which still remains on the hide, regardless of what steps were originally taken when it was tanned and prepped for mounting.

Now that you mention it, I think someone said something about that once. It's a shame, isn't it?

I'm not an expert on this kind of thing, so I can't really answer that. But I would imagine that it would ruin the fur... Balto's pelt isn't exactly a piece of metal or a building where restoring it would not be such a risk.

I've probably asked this before - or seen someone else get the answer - but can't they use some kind of dye to restore his fur's original color? Some might argue that it would be like altering a painting or monument, but I'm pretty sure they restore paintings, famous buildings, and the like all the time.
