Time to review the character rules

Written by Mighty :

Over the last few days there have been characters submitted that are against the rules. So here is a review of those rules again:

Hello Animation Source!

Original article

"Mods have noticed all the problems going on with characters and what is accepted.

The first and probably one of the most important rules is that sparkle dogs/horses/lion ect... are not allowed.  And if you aren't sure what a sparkle character is, it is any character that has an unnatural color that you would not find on the regular animal. So for almost any animal, that includes the colors blue, green, red, purple, pink ect. To go along with that, unrealistic designs are allowed. Please do not give your character excessive jewlery, this does include bracelets, necklaces, collars, leg warmers ect...

Many characters are getting deactivated because either we ask you to clean the body/head image or you don't have enough bio.

When it comes to finding a head image, make sure it is of only the head. It must be colored in and drawn/rendered cleanly. Linearts are allowed and if you choose to use one, make sure that you credit it. That is very important. Same goes for the body picture. It has to be colored in cleanly, again, if you use a lineart, credit the artist. A word of advice, if your character contuines to get deactivated because we ask you to clean the body picture, I suggest you use a lineart There are a ton out there, especially of wolves.

Now about the bio. What most mods look for are;

Name:

Age:

Gender:

Likes:

Dislikes:

Personality:

History:

Related to an official site character:

Those are our main focus, but users also include Parents, siblings, mate, pack/herd/pride and more. A great example of a good bio are these character here;

 /balto/en/chars/Hotaru_34509/40675.html

 /spirit/en/chars/kea/41222.html ,

/lion_king/en/chars/Kanu_FA/32987.html

Always always try to make an effort in your bio, do not just rush through your characters, if you create a charcacter, it should be for a reason. Which does up the point to try to include your character in fan works. We are seeing to many characters in where the creator does nothing with them.

Another important factor. Your first few characters MUST be related to an official Balto character. Our webmaster said when it comes to relation to an official site character, it is more of a ratio. So try to keep the majority of your characters with a relation to the an official characters that is part of the movie.

Another small thing that came to my attention from Blazetail, if you are on Spirit Source, do not create a parrot or a lion. Try to keep character's species one that you see in the movie. If you decide to create a character of an animal that doesn't appear in the movie, but can be found where the movie takes place, they MUST have a relation to an official movie character.

If you have any questions regarding characters, feel free to send a PM to the moderators or just any individual mod!

For Spirit Source: Pegasus' and unicorns are NOT allowed."

That's a real good question, Sora.

If I may... if you have a Tasmanian set up with a relation to the Balto characters, there should be no issue, and, as you said, they went extinct in 1938. So, yeah, there should be no problem with that.

To see if I can save time on a profile, lemme just ask this.

I'm working on revamping a thylacine character for Balto. She was imported by a gold tycoon as an exotic pet, which wasn't uncommon since thylacines were shipped out as pets back before they went extinct (and they went extinct in 1938, so there would be plenty in 1925.) Obviously a Tasmanian marsupial wouldn't appear in Balto, but I have her set up with a relation to the characters. Would that character be allowed or would it be reviewed on a case by case basis?

I'd offer a rebuttal, but as I said, last post was my last post on the matter. I will only say that I never meant to use blue tigers to justify sparkle animals such as pink tigers or green ones with orange stripes. I was asking if they would be /considered/ sparkle animals. Moreover, there is no need to get worked up over the question, since I /said/ it was academic.

Even nature knows when to not put emo hair, arm bands, cutie marks, and tiger stripes on animals. BSers, however, do not show restraint. Hence the rule. I love that I have to say that again.

White tigers exist, DT. They have been proven not only through scientific research, but photographs, expeditions and, now, specimens in zoos and wildlife centers. Balto Source isn't "Cryptozoological Beastie Source". Even the fictional animated animals in the Balto movies are based upon REAL animals, using real colors (for the most part...the lavender-ish tint of Dixie's coat, and the blue-gray tint of the coat of a wolf or two in Balto 2 notwithstanding). One does not say "well, it's justified for people to create sparkle animals and/or over-saturated animals because a blue tiger (let alone a white cheetah with blue spots) is out there somewhere...people have said they've seen it". People have been spotting Sasquatch, the Loch Ness Monster, the Jersey Devil, the Exmore Beast, werewolves, fairies, leprechauns, vampires, the chupacabra, the...do I really need to go on? There yet has never been any hard scientific evidence, nor any live specimen, to back it up.

Until such comes to light, it doesn't follow as a justification for these sparkle animals, or over-saturated ones, that those aforementioned things are said to be out there somewhere.

That's just dragging this out unnecessarily.

People used to say the same about white tigers. Gorillas, too, for that matter (not just white ones, but gorillas at all).
To take your comparison at face value, there is no mutation (that I know of) which can cause an animal which would normally have two horns to have one in the center of its forehead (the effect has been achieved through surgery amounting to a simple skin graft, but that's neither here nor there for our purposes). There are, however, known mutations which can cause animals to appear blue. We know the mutation is there; we know the animals are there. The rest is perfectly reasonable inference.
I'm going to make this my last post on the matter, though, since it would be silly to let this escalate.

DT> To begin with, there are no facts, photos or documents about Maltese tigers. Same with Maltese and chinchilla cheetahs (white with blue spots).
For me they are as unconfirmed and unrealistic as unicorns and I wouldn't encourage anyone to make them...

I haven't come across many accounts of blue tigers, but one witness described it as "blue like a man's shirt," and said he thought it was a person until he got a better look. I suspect this is the kind of shade you're talking about...

... but I guess it goes without saying that one would have to see it in situ before deciding if it would pass as a garment if only caught at a glimpse in the right light. Still, I suppose at least there would be little or no complaint about a grayish-blue tiger, and anyway the question was hypothetical to begin with.

It is pointless to debate the saturation point of color in an animated or even real animal character. What APPEARS to be a little bit blue or a little purple or a little too red is one heck of a lot different than what a sparkle animal is, by definition. Saturation level does not equate with sparkle.

Let's not muddle this discussion with a picking of nits about selected canines shown in the Balto movies, folks. It's beside the point. Yeah...it really is. And even though it comes up every single time we all discuss the questionable merit of sparkle animals (usually when some fan artist wants to defend their reasons for, or "rights" to, submit sparkle animals on this site), it is NOT the same thing. And it is neither a valid justification nor a valid excuse to be used for allowing sparkle animals to be here.
