The snow was falling slow, yes, the Winter was starting and the first snow started to make a white coat everywhere in the forest and the air were being cold, the winter winds were blowing. In this season, wolves and other predators have already hunted other animals as food for the cold winter but two figures were searching caribou or moose, two wolves, a grey and white male with black and red markings and a brown and cream female, following him “D’Leh! Are you sure we’re following the right way? I smell caribou in another way, not here!” said the female “Of course I am! They have to be in front of us, maybe some meters far Nika!” replied D’Leh “and why there are no paw prints of them?” she asked, the male stopped, he thought something and after he answered Nika’s question “Well, maybe because is snowing?!” Nika didn’t say anything, she always trusted her mate and she decided to follow him, even if she knew that maybe D’Leh was wrong but he was the leader and Nika, well, only his mate.

The two wolves continued to search their hunt but without results. D’Leh was a really proud wolf and he would never say that he was wrong, but this time he would regret this choice, he would never forgive himself …after hours that they were walking, nothing changed: they didn’t find anything, neither a caribou, a deer or a rabbit! And Nika started to become tired “D’Leh! Please, slow down…I’m tired!” she said and D’Leh stopped “but…we’re close to them! I know it!” he replied “you said the same thing an hour ago, and two hours ago!” she said, tired, after she sat in the snow, waiting “…come on…we can’t stop now…” said the male “it’s easy for you to talk, you haven’t to carry some pups inside you!” she snarled and Nika was right, she was pregnant and close to gave birth to her first litter “I know, it’s just…well, ok, we can make a pause..” he finally said, for Nika’s happiness. Nika was expecting puppies but she decided to go with D’Leh, first because he was her mate, second because he would be lost without her, they were all together, they were addicted from each other…and Nika was an “exeption” in D’Leh’s pack because his father wanted to find himself a mate for his sons and daughter but, luckily, Nika was a good one and EagleEya accepted her and the rest of the big pack too.

Nika was sitting and still thinking about how that day started, why D’Leh decided to hunt something now, when he knew that all the animals are away for the cold season, a flashback started in Nika’s mind and she re-watched the past day when D’Leh went to talk to his father about the hunting…

“Father, the pack needs food and the hunters returned without preys or good news…we all die this winter if we won’t find food!” said D’Leh to his father “we can’t do anything, our preys moved and we were slow so, no food…we can survive, the pack already went through situations like this” replied calm EagleEya but D’Leh was a bit angry: he wanted to show to his father that he’s a good male, a good future alpha, and not only the other second male that is not like his lost brother Knosso (the favorite son, he would show to his father that he could find a solution for the pack. Layake (EagleEya’s mate) always loved D’Leh for his simplicity and now she would see what her son had in his mind “What do you want to do D’Leh? You know, the hunters have to find food and not the alpha’s son” she said looking at the tired hunters, the leader of them, Semir, walked slowly close to the alphas “I’m sorry sir…they were already gone and we didn’t find anything…” he said with a softly voice: Semir never missed a hunt but this time the winter arrived fast and they were disorganized so, they failed and that would probably cost the life of the less powered in the pack and Semir felt guilty about it. EagleEya always trusted his lead hunter and he knew that this time wasn’t their fault “Don’t worry Semir, we’ll find a solution, you tried to do your best.” Said the alpha and Semir returned to his mate Taika, the daughter of the betas. “I have an idea!” barked D’Leh, ready to explain his plan, ready to show himself to his father “Really?” said Nika, a bit ironic “So speak” said EagleEya, D’Leh stood and started “I can go to search something…you know father that there’s a group of moose and caribou that move later that the others, I know exactly where they are, near the great lake under tha mountains, waiting that the lake become iced to walk on it and go to the other side.” Finally, he explained his idea but his father’s face didn’t change expression “…and don’t you think that maybe the hunters already searched them?!” the old male said, sighed; D’Leh tried to find another thing good but that was his idea but “well, maybe they didn’t see them! They’re not outside, they’re in a cave, to protect themselves from the cold and waiting for the icing of the lake! Simple! I’m going to search them! I’ll carry food to the pack!” he said “…and you’ll be proud of me father” he thought in his mind “You can’t go! It’s too cold and you’re alone!” barked Layake to her son, worried about him “I’ll go with him!” said Nika.

For a few minutes there was silence “What?!” asked Nika, irritated “Well, Nika…you’re expecting our pups and that moment is not so far from here, only 3 weeks so, you can’t come” answered D’Leh and his words were exactly what Layake and EagleEya wanted to say “That’s not fair! Only ‘cause I’m a big pregnant female doesn’t mean that I can’t hunt!” she replied, mad, Nika was always ready for hunting and every activity but now she was carrying her pups and D’Leh thought that she wasn’t safe with some adult male deer  around “We know it dear but…you can get hurt and lose your pups” said Layake; LOSE, this word jumped everywhere in Nika’s head, yeah, if that happened what she could do? But she couldn’t let D’Leh alone, especially now, she knew why D’Leh wanted so much to go hunting for the pack: only to prove to EagleEya that he was really his son. “But he can’t go alone! And if we’ll find nothing, we’ll return fast fast at home: no deer will mean coming home!” she replied, trying to convince the three alphas “Well, ok then but you two have to promise me that you’ll return here immediately when you’ll find or not the deer or caribou or whatever you’ll find!” sighed EagleEya, Nika wagged her tail, happy “Of course we will! Immediately with food or not!” she repeated to the three “But…are you sure?” asked Layake, worried for them, and more for Nika “Don’t worry mom, we’ll be back soon!” said D’Leh and he nuzzled her “But pay attention to the bears! They’re very hungry!” EagleEya admonished them “Ok, bears not good” said ironic Nika and the two young ones left, fast and determinate, searching something good to eat for the pack…

Nika’s mind returned to the real world when D’Leh  licked her  nose “Hey, are you ok?”  he asked, worried to see her  so lost in her thoughts “uh? Oh, I’m fine, just…thinking…” she replied “About what?” he asked “Uh, nothing special” she answered him, they both stood and started to walk again to the lake, they could see it now but no animals, except them obviously, were around or close it and D’Leh felt demoralized but Nika nuzzled him “Don’t worry hon, I’m sure around here there is some meat waiting us!” she said but the male was still perplexed “We have just to find them!” she chuckled at him and started to walk around, D’Leh followed her, honestly it was his idea and so he couldn’t be pessimistic, he had wanted  to go there and therefore had to give him to do, Nika could not make everything  alone! She was pregnant also! “Hey Nika! Wait for me!” he barked at his mate and the two searched accurately, they tried to smell every kind of herbivorous’ smell but the odors that their noses gained were old of a few days and not fresh as the two wished...and D’Leh didn’t want to return home without anything!

“Well, no deer, moose or caribou there…we have to return home…” said Nika and she turned  in the pack’s direction “No.” D’Leh said, the female stopped and looked at him “what? We promised to your father that we returned home!” she barked “But I can’t return home, I won’t return there without food!” he snarled “Please…we can search inside that cave…maybe” but Nika interrupted him “Maybe what? Come on, you know better than me that
