Personality:

Very quiet, timid and insecure. Rue hardly speaks at all, and only if she knows the other animal. She’s also very suspicious in the beginning and doesn’t trust too easily. Because of that, she finds it very hard to make friends, although she’s actually a kind, caring doe. Doesn’t think very high of herself and often feels unwanted, which is why she mostly keeps to herself.

But her friends can absolutely trust her, no matter if it’s with a promise, a favor or with simply helping them out. She’s very devoted to her herd, and tries to help with her intelligence and cunningness.

Has a very strong will to survive.

History:

Not much is known about Rue’s fawnhood. She arrived in the Silver Herd’s territory one night, limping on one hind leg, with fresh wounds on her body. It was Javam who found the doe while he was patrolling the area. She was shivering and obviously needed help. He asked her for her name and how he could help her, but she just looked at him, not responding.

He took her to the herd, where her wounds were taken care of and she was offered a place to sleep. She still didn’t talk, but accepted by nodding.

Lord Malvon decided that she could stay until she had recovered. Judging by how she looked, she had been attacked by some kind of predator, but since she stayed silent all the time, no one could really tell.

Many of the herd’s members supposed that she was mute or had never learned how to speak. She didn’t talk to anyone, even after several days, and merely expressed emotions by her expression, like a brief smile or lowering her ears.

But she was often found near the place where Javam had found her, looking in the distance, sighing and lowering her head. One of the Silver Herd’s members, a doe named Florelle, often tried to talk to her and be as kind as possible, but she still didn’t respond many times.

Until finally, when she tried again, she asked “Why are you so nice to me?”

She could tell Florelle was taken off guard by both the fact that she could talk and by her question, which she didn’t really understand.

She didn’t talk much that day anymore, but day by day, talk by talk, Florelle found out more about her, as it seemed Rue slowly started to trust her.

The fact is, Rue never had felt wanted once in her entire life. Her mother was the mate of her birth herd’s leader, but Rue wasn’t his daughter. She was the daughter of some wandering buck her mother had had a short affair with during the rut for whatever reason.

And it was clear Rue wasn’t the leader’s fawn, she didn’t look like him or her mother at all. The herd leader was furious, and by the laws of her herd, there were only two things that could be done with her. Either her mother would chase her away once she didn’t need to be nursed anymore, or she would be killed immediately.

Rue’s mother of course chose the first possibility, but even then, Rue was treated as if she wasn’t there. No friendly deer talked to her like they did with the other fawns, the does weren’t even allowed to let their fawns play with her. And the herd’s leader? He hated her, and let her feel it. All Rue had was her mother.

But aside from nursing her and teaching her the most important things so she stood a chance living on her own, Rue’s mother left her alone whenever she could. She didn’t want to bond with the fawn – too great the pain would be when she had to push her away eventually.

Rue wasn’t living, all she did was existing.

But it still horrified her when her mother chased her away, snapping and seemingly trying to hit her with her hooves. The four-month-old fawn ran away in shock, not knowing that her mother’s prayers were with her.

 Rue didn’t talk much about what happened after, but Florelle figured out that with what she had experienced, she had been too shy to approach anyone. She was right about that; Rue had never stayed in a herd for long, and few deer had been kind to her, given most had thought of her as rude since she hardly spoke and often walked away without saying anything, being bullied by other fawns she met because she was so timid and silent. That had eventually led to her being too afraid to approach other deer.

Florelle  took pity on her, and after telling the others, everyone in the herd tried to make her feel welcome without being to pushy. Rue slowly started feeling at home, but she still mostly kept on her own, even though she was warming up to the others more and more.

She really grew to like Florelle, as well as some others, and became more talkative and opened-up to the others day by day.

She also fell in love with Javam, the herd's leaders' son, and he liked her back. They became mates.
