Bambi, a Life in the Woods (originally published in Austria as Bambi: Eine Lebensgeschichte aus dem Walde) was a1923 Austrian novel written by Felix Salten and published by Paul Zsolnay Verlag. The novel was the predecessor of the famed Disney film, though it was published almost twenty full years prior to Bambi's 1942 release. It was targeted at an adult audience, and even today it is not recommended for children to read it.
Considered to be one of the first environmental novels published, an English translation by Whittaker Chambers was published in North America by Simon & Schuster in 1928. The novel has since been translated and published in over 20 languages around the world. Salten released a sequel, Bambis Kinder, eine Familie im Walde (Bambi's Children: A Family in the Woods), in 1939.
The novel was well received by critics and is considered a classic. It was named "Book of the Year" for its 1928 English adaptation. It sold over 650,000 copies by 1942, and since then over 5 million have been sold in the US alone. Worldwide, it has sold over 30 million, and each year the number keeps going up.
The movie follows the novel very closely, but some differences include:

I quite liked the boldness. It would have a pg-13 rating today, and
the blood was something else. I liked it. |

Amen! I also appreciated the movie as it captured, I hate to admit,
the blood that was portrayed in the book. I found that a very
important factor and I felt very disgusted when the t.v series didn't
show one drop. More disgusting than the tons of blood in the movie.
(Unfortunately )One of my favorite scenes from the movie is when Fiver is looking for Hazel and "Bright Eyes" plays. =) |

V - Oh, I adored, adored, aDORED the book kand movie. The movie took
the tone, and cranked it Up to Eleven, I loved it, and it captured the
character that is Woundwort very well. Bigwig was awesome as ever, but
in the animated series... just... ugh. It was way too liht, watered
down the elements, Blackavar lost his status of awesomeness and was
comepletely not even an 'example', his'charges' were dropped...
Hyzenthay was replaced with a whiner wo only ucceeded to get what she
wanted, and Bigwig became a massive complainer, and aparently, HAZEL
was the one to beat Woundwort... The series derailed the story itself. |

@Feathervenom Actually, Watership Down the movie was very true to the book. I'm not sure if you were refering to the series, however. Never watched a whole bunch of the series (Maybe three episodes), and I must say, I like the book better in that it captured the true emotion of the book. ^-^ |

I still cannot count how many times I have read and cherished this
book. It's been like a great friend to me, and even and one point I
couldn't get to sleep without reading at least a sentence. The
delicate description, the chilling thrill... splendid. One of my favorite parts of the book is when the Great Prince is helping Bambi run away from the hunters after he gets shot and tells him to eat the leaves to help with the bleeding. It was actually very clever how they escaped. I won't give any spoilers though. =) |

Where could I find it as far as book stores in the United States
goes?? I'd love to read it: I saw something on a website that said
Faline had a brother. D'you think the possible Watership Down site'll have a page like this?? I hope so... the series was so different from the book... |
