Hi there this is my latest project. I'm not sure if you can count this as fan art or if it goes into fan other. Please move if necessary.

I've loved the sea duck ever since I watched talespin, next to the turbokat of the Swat Kats but that's beside the point :D . I've decided to build the famous Conwing L-16 of Baloo into a 3D model. I also used this as a chance to practice making textures for the models. This is still a work in progress as I still have to add a lot more stuff like the actual landing gears, that piece of metal on its nose, and a more detailed engine. Perhaps even the interior if I'm industrious enough : :P I'd like comments feedback and anything that I can use to help improve this model.

Pardon the size of the images. They're fresh out from rendering and that resolution sees most of the detail I tried to put into it. And the water was just a quick put together. Please don't mind how not like water it looks like :D Just focus on the plane for now

EDIT[8/29/09]: Here is a render of the nose of the Conwing again, but this time with the docking thing.

Modelled in Anim8or (a freeware ;) ) and textures made in Paint.NET (Freeware yet again.) Reference image used was that of the Conwing L-16 diagram model sheet.

WOW! It looks great! Besides the missing docking cleat on the nose (which I know you haven't gotten to to yet), and the door jamb and door handle, it looks perfect! Whenever I see work like this I can't help but think "It's too bad TaleSpin doesn't have a 3D video game!" I mean, imagine being able to fly the Sea Duck or cloud surf like Kit! (As well as do other cool stuff from TS.)

But back on topic though... Seriously, this model is very well done!

Are you referring to the model diagram here: http://talespinsourcepage.i8.com/seaduc ... terior.htm ? I'm just wondering because that's really the only diagram of the Sea Duck that I know of. (If there's an official Disney model sheet somewhere on the 'net I would definitely like to know!)

I played around with Blender (free 3D rendering program) a tiny bit years ago... not anywhere near enough to model something like this. I remember when I first ran the program and the main window opened... I was nearly knocked off my chair by the sight of all those buttons! Oh well, maybe someday I'll give it another shot.

Again, great work! Also, it would be interesting if the next time you model something, you could use some kind of screen capture software to record what you're doing and how you're doing it so others can see and learn from you. Just a thought.

Final thought: A rendering of Don Karnage's plane would make a great next project, IMHO.

Thanks for the feedback. I really appreciate it. :) I actually got into a loss as to what to do so now my direction will be adding the docking cleat and door handle. Will be up as soon as I finish.

As for the reference image, the one in your link is not exactly the one I used. It seems to be a variant of the image. I honestly can't recall where I found it first but it seems official. It has the company logo on top and a 'signature' by Baloo where he approves the modifications. I uploaded the image to my photobucket, the link is here: http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y205/A ... hnical.gif If anyone knows where this image comes from please tell me so I can give credit where it's due. >< I shouldn't be this forgetful... EDIT: Er... I just explored the link you gave me and it has WAY more detail than what I have. Thanks for sharing it with me. Now i can work on the interior as well :D

Perhaps I'll do record myself working one of these days. (I've already tried camstudio when I color my drawings in paint ^_^ it should work fine hopefully with anim8or) My friends are bugging me to teach them how to use anim8or. Btw anim8or is a more user-friendly version than blender. It may not have the same amount of features as blender but it can hold its own. ;)

Perhaps I'll work on Don Karnage's plane then make an animation with the two :D

Well, that's very good :)
I remember seeing something like this on the web, although I hadn't bookmarked the page so I can't provide it...
In any case, it's very well made, you probably spend a lot of time on this.

It's fine here, and you also can send this as a fanart on the site (fanarts is for things you've done entirely yourself, which is the case here even if it's not a drawing)

Well that's the first time I see it. But that's very cool :)

Mmm, if it's a Starfox-like game, maybe...(which would be difficult, considering the sea duck DOESNT have guns - unless they would include that on purpose for the game, like they did for the Nes version)
Otherwise, I would rather have a 2D game :) (a real shame all the games Talespin had were pretty bad :( Especially when considering that all of the best Disney games had been made during the same period...)

And why not the Iron Vulture?

I'll make the whole fleet :D ... ok calm down one at a time XD

I'll upload it on the site's fanart section when I have at least 90% of the model finished.

Regarding the game it's going to be a bit of a challenge ^^ lol I don't want to give the lovable sea duck guns. I'd keep the guns on my P-38, which the Conwing L-16 looks startingly similar to. :D

Calm down people! I have no intention of giving the Sea Duck guns, at least not bullet firing ones. There's more than one way to to make a game that involves flying planes fun without shooting at one another, although there would be some dogfights. Like having multiple playable characters for instance. So if you play as Baloo, you fly the Sea Duck and get no (conventional) guns, but if you play as Don Karnage, you fly his plane and of course get guns. You may be thinking "That's not very fair, how can an unarmed plane have a chance against an armed one?" The same way it did in the show: using skill and nonlethal cartoony defenses... like mangoes. Maybe Wildcat could build a fully automatic rotten mango cannon. That would be fun to shoot, funny to watch, and effective (seeing as the pirates' planes have no canopy.)

If you've ever played the original "Spyro the Dragon" game series, (the ones by Insomniac for the PlayStation 1) then you know how much that game (and games like it) can be. The type of game I'm thinking of for TS would be very similar in terms of gameplay. It would have a little bit of everything, like the adventure, mystery and puzzle elements of popular platformers like "Tomb Raider" and "The "Prince of Persia", as well as aerial flying/fighting elements like "Star Craft". Remember, Don Karnage and Baloo don't always have to be pitted against each other. Karnage could instead focus his fury on another foe, like Thembrians, Shere Khan's planes, or rival pirates, just as Baloo could fly in non-combative missions like an air race or something.

I could go on and on about a TS game, but I don't want to hijack the thread. I may make a separate thread for it later.

BTW eclipse, I thought of a great use for your Sea Duck model and any other TS related models you may do. The original series used computer models to choreograph the dogfight sequences and help the animators get the perspective just right... Your models could do that for any art/animation that may be done for the TS virtual series. Actually, If the models are cartoony enough, they could probably be used directly via screenshots. I was researching ways to do this and this is what I found:

Cell Shading (aka Toon Shading)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cell_shading
http://download.blender.org/documentati ... ading.html

These don't exactly look like the art style of the show, but it's a starting point. Also I know the example is for Blender, but hopefully something similar exist for Anim8tor. I look forward to seeing more models!

That's a great idea. I'll fix up perhaps the shading, and another set of textures XD, to get a look and feel like the show. Anim8or may not have a direct way of doing it but it is possible. ;) I just need to put my mind to it

EDIT: [8/26/09] Here's a closeup of the door. I tried putting in a handle and add some detail texture to the door. I don't really know what kind of handle the Sea Duck has. The diagrams nor the cartoon show what kind of handle it has. So I just did some guesswork when it came to that ^^

Here's an update. I tried to give the outer door handle some form. The quote is from my original post XD

Very nice! :)

I found this on the web, someone has been playing with the editor in Banjo Kazooie Nuts & Bolts (I think it's related to the topic so I'll post it here) :

Image

Source : http://carnage.bungie.org/haloforum/hal ... ead=920480

Of course, yours is more precise, but it's still very nice too I think :)

EDIT : Oh, and I just found out another link I bookmarked : a Sea Duck for Flight simulator!

http://www.simviation.com/simviation/?t ... 61&page=15

There's even textures, maybe it could help?

LOLOLOL (I beg your pardon for using that XD I couldn't help myself)

The bungie L-16 looks so funny XD *thought drifts past mind = Msater Chief in Baloo's place of the logo with a red scarf, thumbs up and that particular plane replaces the original sea duck*

If I had Microsoft Flight Sim I'd download that! :D But on the XPlane(Another Flight Sim) community they were actually in the process of building a more accurate version of the Sea Duck. However the thread that appeared in was three or four years old already so I don't know what happened to that one. I love flight simulators and planes XD I have a different one, a free one, and I was planning to make an L-16 for that but it used a little more simple(but more complex... in terms of userinterface) 3D modeling system. So i can't easily input the one I have into there sadly. :(

Nice find though :D

Well, it seems someone else did an awesome job with the Sea Duck too :

EDIT : Ok, I found out who did it on Deviantart, but it's NOT a 3D model, it was drawn :

I would love to make this as a plane in X-Plane9

There's one thing I might get hung up on. I need to create a functional control panel and 3D interior for the aircraft.
