Hmm.. I was thinking that myself. But I have a better idea so the place doesn't crowd with stickys ;) I will steal MayaHuskee's clever plan for the Fan More section! I will make links in the only sticky in this section - "All you Need To Know"

I think it's alright in this case, Mighty. The person above you contributed some worthwhile information. Not the kind of stuff members usually do when resurrecting dead topics (like "wow i didnt no that").

I know it's super old, but I spent hours searching for those names. I think it's still important to recognize the dog of the Serum Run even if this topic is old

The thing is, Shadowfate, the original post (which was made by me under an older version of this account, which since was deactivated by me) had a lot of this information. While I applaud your work on this, and for pitching in, this stuff has been detailed here before.

Though I certainly would be eager to see you pitch in with other serum run information if you want to help!

You've read The Cruelest Miles. lol Okay. Good start. What else? Where have you gone to do research? What other books have you read? Have you contacted any institutions or individuals?

Well, I recommend the book as one resource, as it is well-researched. There are others as well.

As I said to someone else who was posting here (although not in a contributory way so much as an argumentative and troublemaking way), newspapers are a fair secondary source for historical research, but definitely not a primary one. They are often riven with exaggerations, errors, outright fabrications, and slanted viewpoints based upon the political/social/cultural leanings of the journalists and editors, and often upon faulty information and rumor floating around at the time (take the Titanic disaster as a noteworthy example of this).

Heck, journalists of the time were often paying people they interviewed to fabricate stories (or just conjure one up out of thin air) just to generate what they felt would be an interesting and compelling story...even if it were absolute baloney. Again, the Titanic disaster is a key example (it is well-established that journalists were offering money to surviving passengers and crew to tell them a good story regardless of the facts, just so they could "scoop" other journalists and papers, and gain notoriety for a great story). And such things happened in Nome in the days following Gunnar Kaasen's arrival with the serum.

Unfortunately, some people just don't get that. And they often use newspapers as primary source material for research, even if they contradict more reliable sources.

Be cautious of using them for anything other than an interesting addition to better and more reliable material, and note where they contradict those more reliable materials...which should be a clear indication of their erroneous nature.

In addition to providing the list of first relay serum run dogs provided by Shadowfate several posts earlier on this page, I would like to add and clarify a few dogs on that list.

Bear survived and was sold to a wealthy lady in NY in late 1925 along with all the rest of the dogs Shannon had brought with him to the lower 48. See the Bill Shannon dogs topic in this forum for more information about that.

In addition to the three dogs listed on Seppala's team there was also Billiken, Pete, Matte, Bijou and Nanette. Scotty was not the original dog born around 1910, but was actually named Young Scotty, born about a decade later. A photo of Seppala's team taken at the time of his arrival back at Nome shows Billiken and Young Scotty in the lead positions.

The actual names of twelve of the Gunnar Kaasen team dogs were Balto, Fox, Mactuck, Tilly, Bill, Cella, You, Dodge, June, Blackie, Silva and Dick. This list was provided by Gunnar Kaasen in early April, 1925. Some of the names later became distorted.
