Hey everyone. Well, after bashing my way through my first semester of school work and drifting in and out of my ususal creative mindset, I've settled on a few stories to write up, and here are the previews.
Believe -The sequel to In the Name of Aniu ... Jenna inhaled sharply as she felt movement inside her and laid more on her side to accommodate. As she settled down again, she thought of Balto. It had been well over a month since they’d coupled –in the very basket she lay in- and it would not be much longer before their children came. Slowly, she rose to her paws and padded to the front door. She whined and Rosie came down the stairs, still rubbing sleep from her eyes. “Jenna?” she yawned. “A little early today, huh?” She noticed Jenna’s expanded belly. “Guess those puppies are coming soon. Where’s Balto, girl?” Jenna looked at Rosie and then back at the door. Little Rosie didn’t know -couldn’t know- what had happened. “Aw, don’t worry, girl,” Rosie said, patting her on the head. “He wouldn’t just leave; he’ll be back.” Jenna sighed. No, he won’t. Not anymore. Rosie unlatched the door, and Jenna padded out and down the street. She had hardly gone a dozen steps when a shrill voice hailed her. “Jenna! It’s about time you got up!” Jenna sighed softly and turned. “Hello, Dixie.” The little Siberian husky came prancing up to her, smiling. “Listen, Jenna, do you mind if we have a talk, just girl-to-girl?” “Dixie, I just wanted to take a walk this morning.” “Oh, it won’t take long, Jenna, I promise.” Jenna heaved her chest and nodded. “I guess I don’t have much of a choice, do I?” “Not really,” Dixie remarked with a laugh. “Let’s talk in the boiler room, okay?” “Fine.” Once they had padded inside, Dixie sat down, but Jenna remained standing. “What did you want to talk about, Dixie?” Before Dixie could answer, though, the sound of approaching paws reached Jenna’s ears, as did the voice of a familiar Afghan hound. “…I’m telling you, if she thinks she can keep this to herself, she’s dead wrong. Now, we know Kale’s dead, and I haven’t Steele since the serum run, but there’s always some guy who’ll be glad to oblige a lady in need.” Just then, a small group of dogs stopped in front of the boiler room. Jenna recognized Sylvie as the speaker. “Of course, she’ll never tell a soul, so I guess we’ll only know when the pups-” Sylvie cut off abruptly as she realized the boiler room was occupied. Jenna furrowed her brow as her eyes burned into Sylvie’s. Her friend set her jaw, but avoided Jenna’s gaze. The crowd of dogs looked away as they padded back the way they’d come. “Sylvie, come in here, please,” Jenna said calmly. Sylvie padded slowly into the boiler room and sat down facing Jenna, her head hung. Jenna eyed her for a moment and then turned on Dixie. “Is this what you wanted to talk about?” “I…I just wanted to know where Balto was; no one’s seen him in weeks and…well, you don’t seem like yourself lately, and when you wouldn’t tell anyone why, we just…guessed.” “Guessed?” Jenna exclaimed. “And you spread rumors as though they were true based on your guesses!” Dixie and Sylvie drew back in shock at Jenna’s outburst. “Well, could…could you tell us where Balto is, then?” Dixie ventured. Jenna’s expression changed dramatically and she seemed to withdraw into herself. “I don’t want to talk about that,” she replied timidly. Sylvie looked up in surprise. “Why not?” Jenna looked away as visions of their last night filled her mind. “It’s painful to think of,” she said flatly. “What do you mean? Why?” As Jenna searched for a viable answer, Sylvie glanced down at her swollen belly. “Are those really Balto’s pups, like you said?” Jenna’s eyes narrowed and she bared her teeth in anger as she came within an inch of Sylvie’s face. “How dare you,” she whispered fiercely. Then, without another word, she turned and quickly padded out, leaving Sylvie and Dixie watching in a mix of shame and disbelief. A moment later, Dixie took hold of her senses and rushed to the door. “Jenna! Jenna, wait!” she called. But Jenna paid Dixie no mind, and instead ran as fast as her legs would carry her toward the outskirts and Balto’s boat. ...
May the Force Be with Us All -A Star Wars/Balto crossover.
Forty-one days of miserable rain, by the powers… The trees around him seemed to sneer down at him, and the branches snagged on his dark brown robes as he made his way through the underbrush. Even the very ground beneath him tugged at his shoes, pulling him down with each step he took. He glanced at the small holographic map projector his carried and adjusted his direction to follow the near-invisible path across a small clearing. Just then, there was a rustling in the bushes ahead of him. The young wolf-dog stopped abruptly and looked quickly around. There was no cover near enough to shelter him, and if the approaching being was an enemy, or, by the sound of the footfalls, several enemies, he likely wouldn’t be able to hold his own. He spread his legs into a fighting stance and eyed the bushes. A moment later, three super battle droids advanced into an empty clearing, their oiled joints whirring and clicking as they moved along. They reached a spot where the ground seemed disturbed and stopped, lowering their cold metal visors to examine the swampy mud. Behind them, the mud turned an odd blue color and the mud dried up and began to smoke. Suddenly, a dark figure burst from beneath the mud and water wielding a light saber. Had any of the droids seen him, he might have looked like a demon, shrouded in shadow. He struck like lightning, slicing off the heads of the first two droids before they could even turn around. The third managed to get a glimpse of the wolf-dog’s face before his light saber buried itself in his visor. As the third droid fell with a splash to the swampy ground, the young Jedi flicked a switch on his light saber and the bright blue beam retracted on itself into the small cylinder he held in his paw. He turned his face to the sky to let the rain wash away the grime and muck, and prepared to move on. But then he saw that one of the droids had the double bars of a captain on painted onto its shoulders. He bent down and pulled a small disk-shaped device and connected it to a small slot in the droid’s head. The device beeped quietly and projected a three-dimensional hologram of an official-looking tan husky in black robes. “Sirius,” the Jedi growled. “The Jedi are weakening in strength and number. Press the attack,” the holographic figure said, “Your orders are to eliminate the Republican forces on the Istona Peninsula. Once this is accomplished, Katrina will finally be freed of their scum.” The hologram faded and the Jedi disconnected his communicator. No sooner had he done this, though, than it lit up again with an incoming message. The young Jedi smiled when he recognized Treffen. “Balto, where the hell are you? You’re supposed to be guarding Station 3. Why aren’t you-?” “Station 3 is gone, Master,” Balto interrupted. Treffen’s holographic likeness fell silent, and though his brow furrowed in frustration, his eyes betrayed the anger and sorrow he felt. “How many?” he asked quietly. Balto took a shallow breath. “It’s hard to tell, really, Master, but aside from me and a few other Jedi, only a handful of the troops survived. We were separated when one of their gun ships took a pass at us. I haven’t seen any of them since, and this blasted storm isn’t helping things…” “Just make your way here, Balto,” Treffen replied, “You can…fill me in when you get here.” “Yes, Master,” Balto replied, preparing to deactivate the com link. “And Balto-” “Yes, Master?” “May the Force be with you.”
