This topic would seem to be as relevant today as it has been in the past.....even dating back to just after the serum run. And just for clarification purposes, part of Forum Rule #9 says "Bringing back old topics IS allowed (even topics from years ago)."
Coaster wrote: "There is some uncertainty about Balto's birth year. Although the accepted year is 1922, Seppala once said that Balto was six years old at the time of the Serum Run. That would make him fourteen when he died and have a birth year of 1919." ----------------------------------------- (deleted user) wrote: "(the idea that he died at 14 is a mistake. Balto lived no more than 11 years.....from 1922 to 1933." ----------------------------------------- One place where the account of Seppala saying Balto was six years old at the time of the serum run is found in the book "The Cruelest Miles." There is also a notation in the book "The World of Sled Dogs" by Lorna Coppinger which says the same thing
Within about ten days after arriving in the Lower 48, Gunnar Kaasen had told two different newspapers that Balto was six years old at that time.
Based on these various accounts, it's remotely possible that Balto was born sometime in January of 1919. But by far, the odds heavily favor him being born in 1918, and most likely sometime during the second half of that year. Either way, that would of made Balto 14 years old when he passed away.

Hello,
This topic is posted since 2006, and I doubt that is beneficial repost here. Sarah, you will not be penalized, but be careful to not repeat. Post in an old topic is useless, especially if several years old.
I don't lock this topic, it would be pointless.

I agree with Flitzalys. And once again, I point out that various "accounts" from newspapers are pointless to mention unless those accounts are quoted...as they can otherwise not be discussed or taken on faith by any layperson.
That being said, I think it is prudent to abide by the guidelines set by the moderators here, and not go any further (for anyone).

That article is pretty well known among those who do actively study Fritz's post mortem history (and the end of his life). Thanks for adding it though...it will be a nice addition for any who are curious about the taxidermy mount of his body.

One question how did the zoo that Balto was in cover up his death for 3 more years, other than that this topic has the most information i've seen in a while, you really put some time and effort into this it's brill

Lol ^
Personally I would much rather have these guys be given a proper burial, couldn't they just make a model replicating the body of the dogs? Bodies, even if preserved, begin to decompose. I wish these guys had been buried in a ceremony, perhaps in Central Park where the Balto statue it located, bodies whole. But this s the first I have heard of Fritz, I am very interested in the story of Balto and Togo, glad to hear about another sled dog!

I'm talking more about the quality of the pelt, as the OP stated the fur color has changed drastically, and the age obviously shows.
