Fang visibly cringed when he heard the words, but calmed a little when Kodi seemed to stand up for him. He also noticed Dusty gave the crowd a glare, looking for the one who'd yelled. It felt good to have friends who would stand up for him, it wasn't a feeling he was used to, but he very much appreciated it.

Sally actually HAD seen which dog had said it and lowered a glare his way, raising her tail a bit. By now the room new she was a skunk, and while many dogs were merely surprised to see one up close who was actually polite and well mannered (and could communicate with them, which they didn't know the species could do), the dog still gave a whimper and backed off. Sally returned to her calm posture. Fang may have been doing well, but that didn't mean his adopted mother wasn't still going to protect him if she thought he needed it. She turned back to the conversation in process.

Fang felt a little embarrassed when Kodi brought up his emaciated state, but he knew it was true. If he ever wanted to be a sled dog, he would NEED to get back in shape. But he could tell already that he was getting better, now that he got food in his stomach on a regular basis. "Yeah, I kn-" he started, then noticed Kodi turning to Dusty and trying to get her attention. He blinked, noticing that something seemed a bit...off about Kodi. He seemed anxious for some reason.

Dusty blinked. She'd paid attention to what was being said, but Kodi still surprised her by turning so suddenly. "Oh well...there's that jerky, I think that'd probably be a good idea," she replied, cocking her head slightly. "What else is there though?" she asked, not sure what all was on the menu.

Sally looked at Kodi with a little concern. Her capability to read dogs hadn't deadened. She could tell something else was on his mind, but what was it?

-------

Jenna saw Kodi's reactions. "Yes...something is off...Balto, maybe we should talk to Sally, she might know something. She does seem to be a decent judge of character if nothing else, maybe she's noticed something we missed," she whispered, a little concern in her tone she just couldn't get rid of. She did worry for Kodi, especially when something seemed to be up.

Kodi bounced his head exuberantly, trying to air a visible sense of retention and reassurance.

"Besides the jerky? I'm not sure what all we've got," he said rather blithely. "I'll go check now and bring a sampler back if I see something I think you'll like."

One paw stepped down the small set of stairs from the stage, before Kodi turned his head behind him to look at the two canines and the skunk behind him.

"Make sure they don't go anywhere, Sally!" He called out to her jokingly, noticing her expression. He tried to sound as high-spirited as he could, but he was entirely serious. Fang needed additional sustenance, for one. Kodi didn't think it likely that he would leave the premises, but he had a sneaking suspicion that Fang would be apt to turn down a meal for wanting to appear gracious and unselfish. For two, Dusty was obviously not to be left alone, isolated, or anything of the sort after her (or rather, THEIR ordeal, but Kodi knew it was much more stirring for her) ordeal.

Kodi stepped down into the throngs of canines. After only a few seconds, he had already collided against another dog that was in an apparent rush to go somewhere else. He was never much for crowds, and as much as he loved the earnest effort put forth by his mother, he had a great fondness for the intimate family gathering of yesteryear.

Maybe Dusty doesn't necessarily need to be surrounded by a swath of strangers either, he thought. Although they would have at least a couple of weeks with no mail runs to devote to a quiet night or two to devote to a heartfelt discussion, he thought it best to stick it out and avoid any awkward questions asking why they didn't attend, or why they left. Playing along would hopefully be enough to buy some time to sort their emotions out before others asked about it.

For there was no doubt there would be questions. After Dusty's breakdown, Kirby, Ralph, and Balto, wherever they were in this soiree, were rightfully concerned about their friends. If Kodi knew Balto's modus operandi like he thought, Balto's need to help ran the risk of overpowering his sense of courtesy. Granted, Balto DID coax Ralph and Kirby from accosting them outside, so that was a good start. However, it was only a matter of time. Balto was always so dependable that way. Always.

In his absentminded introverted musings, Kodi realized his was just shy of walking face first into a wooden wall not three feet in front of him. He could have walked past the hors' d'oeuvres without even realizing it! He uttered a focused sniff to the air, trying to locate those morsels by smell, but to no avail. Combined with the peppered smell of jerky, the smoky smell of the fires, and the cavalcade of dogs, Kodi couldn't discern where any food was specifically. Exasperatedly, he sighed and began to follow along the wall, hoping to find the snacks perched along the bars and tables lining the building.

----------------

Jenna wasn't the only one who saw the flash of concern lighting Kodi's countenance. Balto saw it as well, and listened to Jenna's suggestion as they watched Kodi walk towards the edge of the stage. It looked like Kodi had even addressed Sally about something - Balto couldn't be sure from across the room. Either a bizarre coincidence that Jenna had mentioned it, or perhaps Kodi too had reached to Sally for her perception. It seemed a very sudden confession, considering they had only been there for half an hour or so, but stranger things have happened.

"I think you might be on to something with Sally," Balto agreed. "It wouldn't be a bad idea to check in, see what she knows." Dropping the suspicious pretense, he quickly amended with a "a-and, of course, you know, to check ask how she's doing. The party and all."

At this point, Kodi disappeared from the top of the stairs onto the main floor, vanishing behind several dogs who were engaged in a balancing contest on their hind legs, none of them succeeding for longer than a couple of seconds. Balto wondered where he had gone to, but was slightly relieved that they might be able to glean some information without disturbing the recently mended relationship between father and son. He didn't want to damage that again.

"This looks as good a time as any," Balto exclaimed. "Let's get over there," he nudged his head forward as he and Jenna weaved to the stage through the crowd.

Fang blinked, a little confused by Kodi, but nodded. Kodi was right to worry about his timidness making him want not to impose, it was really just his personality. But he DID understand he needed to get some meat on his bones, considering he was still malnourished. He was surprised at just how much a few good meals could do for a dog, though. He felt a lot stronger than he had for quite some time now that he was eating well.

He decided to talk to Dusty a little bit while they waited. "So...was the trip really that dangerous?"

Dusty had been watching Kodi in a bit of confusion. He still seemed to be acting kind of off...then her confusion left when she remembered that he had every reason to be acting strangely. They'd nearly died three times, a monster was on the rampage in the woods, and his girlfriend had almost had an...unsavory encounter with the leader of a pack of wild dogs. She tried not to look disturbed by that thought. Was it any surprise Kodi was a little on edge? They'd have to talk it over later.

"Dusty?"

"Huh?" Dusty asking, turning to Fang, realizing he was trying to get her attention. "Oh...sorry, Fang, I was thinking," she said, blushing a little under her fur from embarrassment.

"Oh, it's ok. I asked if it was really that dangerous a trip," Fang repeated, not quite worried, but curious.

Dusty gave it thought. "Well...a little more than usual, really. The storm plus the new root messed with us a bit, we'll probably do better now that we've got the route down pat...you scared?"

"Not quite as much as I thought...guess living in the wilderness all my life gives me at least a little edge," Fang said, though more hopefully.

Dusty blinked. "Yeah...you know, I hadn't thought of that...you might be on to something there."

---------

Jenna nodded, following her mate. She then stopped Balto for a moment and went over. "Sally," she whispered. "Can you come talk to me and Balto for a second?" she asked. The skunk nodded and Jenna lead Balto to a spot on the stage out of earshot of Fang and Dusty. "Sally...have you noticed anything about Kodi and Dusty?"

Sally nodded. "Yeah, I have," she admitted, keeping an eye on the two. "They seem a bit jumpy...something is definitely going on," she explained, giving it thought, before looking over to Kodi. "I think something happened they're not telling us..."

Balto had been leaning in, intently absorbing every syllable that Sally uttered as soon as she claimed to notice the erratic behavior. It confirmed Balto's theory that either through femininity or maternity, females, or particularly mothers, were far more attuned to translating emotes, expressions, and cues than males, or at least HE, was. Sally, whom had barely spoken with Kodi and Dusty, could already tell something was amiss. It was a very promising start.

So, imagine Balto's disappointment when she echoed the same thing that he and Jenna had discussed. He rapidly faced downward, bouncing his wet nose off of the wooden stage. The stinging made his eyes water, but it did little to restrain his frustration.

"So you see it too?" He asked bewilderedly, and immediately hushed himself when a pair of Huskies to his left offered a curious stare. Of course Balto already knew the answer, and was really only wording the question for his own sake. He shook his head rapidly, hoping the influx of air would stave off the flaring sting of his snout.

Balto quickly glanced at Dusty and Fang, making sure they weren't looking at him. Not too long, he thought. Or they'll notice. In the same rotation of his head, he scanned the crowd to see where Kodi was. The reddish-copper coat was fairly unique in and around Nome, but given the hazy coloring illuminating the room from the fires and holiday baubles, Balto couldn't discern between his son's coat and the rather common shade of brown that many of the dogs in the party possessed.

"Just to clarify," Balto pleaded to the white striped Sally, "they didn't say... ANYTHING? At all?"

He told himself he wouldn't ask either Dusty or Kodi, and he told Ralph and Kirby the same thing. So far, he hadn't breathed an interrogative word to either of them. Asking all of their friends and family for an answer was still keeping with the impromptu promise he made only half an hour ago, right?

-----------------------

After shuffling around barstools and the dogs that joyfully took the festivities as an occasion to occupy said furniture when it was expressly forbidden in their homes, Kodi found the buffet table. It was a series of booths at a noticeably lower height than the rest of the bars and tables within, easily obscured by the throngs of canines. He couldn't imagine his mother keeping the food as hard to find as it were, when the primary wooden bar would have sufficed. If he had to guess, some of the more hungry dogs started to migrate the vittles there to here to ensure a hidden share to themselves, and it slowly overtook the main bar as the food location.

Kind of ironic to be hoarding food on the holidays, Kodi thought. A bit out of spirit.

A mite jaded, don't you think?
I prefer realistic.
You mean that not all dogs are as giving and generous as your mother? Your FATHER?
Your naivety is showing.
Not mine. YOURS.

Kodi felt a light brush against the back of his foreleg as he stared absentmindedly at the spread of food before him, snapping him back to attention. A smaller dog, one that couldn't have been much bigger than Mel, passed underneath him. She leapt up onto the polished curved bench serving as a seat for the former humans that might have dined there. Without much effort, she grappled a plump spiced sausage from the tabletop, before giving Kodi an affronted look and leaping back down the floor.

"Real gentleman, that one," she muttered as she vanished into the crowd again.

Kodi could have whipped himself with his own tail for his thickheadedness. It wasn't greed at all the determined where the meals were placed - it was accessibility. His mother likely made the table there so that everyone could grab and go how they pleased, with height or stature made complete non-issues.

It seemed so obvious, how had he missed it? And why had he jumped straight to thinking that it was purposely obscured to serve the appetites of those informed? How silly of him; not all dogs were schemers out to attain their own ends.

Not all, he thought, but some. Steele, that Dog...

"Dusty..." he murmured.

He grabbed a tablecloth from a thatched bin on the ground at the edge of the table, and hastily scooped particular items of food. The same flavor sausage that the shorter dog had grabbed not moments ago found itself placed on the dark green material. A couple strips of jerky were then strewn atop that, a pepper flake wedging itself between two of Kodi's teeth. He happily used his tongue to pry it loose, the minor tang of heat pleasantly settling there.

He actively avoided bones - while a great distraction, flavorful and long-lasting though they were, there was very little actual sustenance to be had from them without a good deal of picking away to the marrow. Time that Fang, in his state of nigh-emaciation, didn't need to spend.

He left the last t-bone steak on the table, in case a dog hungrier than he or his party were to happen along later, when all of the more bite-sized bits were gone. Kodi very much doubted that other dogs would afford the same consideration.

"Shtop it," he scolded himself as he finagled the edges of the tablecloth into a half decent bow with his teeth, allowing him to carry his bounty back to the stage unhindered. Trotting back to Fang, Dusty, and Sally, he peered up to his destination and saw two more added to their number - Balto, and Jenna. Balto's mannerisms, the folded ears and quick jerks of his head.... Kodi could tell even from a distance that he was uncomfortable, conspiring with his mother and Sally from the looks of it. What about?

"Oh no..." he groaned through the tablecloth, and he hastened his pace.

Dusty considered what Fang had said. It made sense that Fang would have that advantage due to his upbringing. He may not have had sled dog training, but he still had wilderness skills that came completely naturally to him. That was something that they could definitely use to their advantage. On top of that, he did get his paws from the wolf side of his family, which they'd seen with Balto to be an advantage. "That might actually be something we can use. You've lived in the wilderness your whole life, we can definitely take advantage of that."

Fang's ears perked up. "Really?" he asked, excited at the prospect of something he already knew being a much needed advantage. He didn't have many, every one he could get was worth it.

Dusty nodded. "Yeah, we can ask Kodi about it when he gets back," she replied, giving a bright smile. She wanted to make Fang confident in himself, he needed that more than he needed advantages.

-------

Sally gave it thought. "Well, apparently they had some close calls on the trail, but nothing that seemed out of the ordinary enough to make them this upset," she admitted, giving it thought. "Do you know anything I don't?" she asked, genuinely concerned. "Maybe I can help piece things together a bit more if I know the whole story." The skunk looked around the room, she couldn't find Kodi either.

Jenna nodded. "Yes, Balto, you mentioned some bits and pieces, but you were a bit frantic at the time. Mind telling us again, calmly?" she asked. She knew they didn't want to attract attention, which was why she was making sure her body language was saying 'friendly conversation'. "And perhaps try to look less stressed, dear," she advised.

"Mph!"
"Hey, watch it!"
"D'ya mind?"

These were among several of the utterances as Kodi clumsily shuffled his way through the droves of dogs as he progressed towards the stage. After Dusty's pseudo breakdown outside, Kodi felt that Balto had some sort of an understanding of their wishes to keep an already delicate situation under wraps when he bid Kirby and Ralph to continue towards the gathering while Dusty and Kodi affirmed their pillars of support to each other.

Kodi also felt that his mother, bless her heart, was worrisome concerning her family. In hindsight, Kodi knew that he was acting more sensitively than normal these past few days, especially after that terrifying ordeal. If Balto could detect it from him, then Kodi was absolutely certain that Jenna could sense it through both of them. Was she asking him about it? Why did his dad look so uncomfortable?

As he weaved in and out of other dogs, he lost his visual on them for a moment. Kodi frantically scanned the stage again, his eyes resting on Dusty and Fang rather than the three parental figures he had been seeking. Fang looked pleasantly surprised, but bashful. Dusty looked hopeful, and enthusiastic.

Kodi shook his head, dismissively. Dusty was at the heart of that proverbial storm, yet there she was, musing with Fang cheerily. If she was worried or panicky, she didn't show it one iota.
Kodi stopped moving for a second, and listened. All around him, he heard the sounds that defined the occasion. Merriment, laughter, hooting and hollering. It was the sound of others sharing their stories. As he drank in the noise, it occurred to him that he was going on about a Christmas party the wrong way. He was supposed to be having fun, not worrying about what it was that his father may have been discussing with Jenna and Sally. For all he knew, maybe they were talking about how they met - a cute story that Balto often winced at in embarassment, but one that Jenna found incredibly sweet.

He drew a sharp breath through his nostrils, seemingly forgetting to breathe in his moments of serendipity. While he regulated his breathing, the smoky scent of his delivery reminded him why he had left Fang and Dusty's company in the first place. One more deep breath.

Slowly, with deliberation and a heightened sense of awareness, he sidled past the few dogs that were stationed at the front row of the stage. Not brushing against any of them, he climbed the stairs, one step at a time. His eyes very briefly swept over Balto, Jenna, and Sally, not meeting any of their gazes, if at all they were looking at him. He didn't know. They were sharing their stories, and he was anxiously looking forward to partaking in whatever tale brought such exuberance to Dusty and Fang. That, and the food he brought was becoming more and more fragrant.

Kodi joined Dusty and Fang, kneeling down to rest his fashioned satchel on the ground. He tugged at the errant segment of fabric from the bow, and tugged sharply, unraveling all of it's succulent contents. As the meat splayed out onto the unfolded cloth, he announced "Soup's on! Take your pick."

He stood up, waiting for the other two to make their selection before he grabbed a bite himself. "I miss anything?" he asked curiously.

----

Balto hastily turned his attention to the brass lining that stood six inches high on the wall surrounding the stage. The misuse after the closing of the building left a fine layer of dust, not enough for the paneling to obsucre his reflection. Jenna was right - he looked frazzled. He forcibly tried to flatten the unkempt fur on his head with his large paws, to make him appear more dignified and controlled, but to no avail. It sprung upwards resiliantly, unfettered by his efforts. That particular style was his charge, and he recalled it doing no favors in keeping the towns folk wary of him.

Instead, he noticed his ears folded back, and his hunched posture. That must have been what Jenna meant. He stood straight up, and tried to will his ears forward. Unlike his vain effort to tame his hairdo, this alteration took.

"Alright... where to begin," he mused aloud as he turned back to Jenna and Sally. Balto hoped that preparing his dearth of knowledge would lessen the embarassment of his absurd salon work.

"I don't know much," he prefaced. "Just what Ralph and Kirby told me." He knew it wasn't much to go off, and he was regretting his decision to cut the conversation short with as little clarification he'd been given. His better judgment couldn't outlast his worried curiosity.

There was also the matter of what he overheard when they were arriving. When Dusty started shaking. Dusty didn't say anything specifically, but the terror in her voice, and the desperation in Kodi's comforting led him to predict something... unspeakable had happened. Balto did not want to mention this to either Jenna or Sally until he was sure. As parents, all three of them worried about their kin with a tenacious zeal. While Dusty may not have been family by blood, she was by virtue of her and Kodi's friendship. If Balto's starting uttering his terrible prediction, Jenna would be more fraught with worry than he was.

"So, we know that they took a new route. We also know that it was dangerous," he started. His audience knew this - and Jenna, at least, knew that a dangerous run was not enough to cause such a shaking panic like he had witnessed. "They made it to White Mountain," he continued, thinking he sounded like a checklist. It was better to sound collected than crazy, he reminded himself.

Now the next part - Balto hadn't given it much thought until now, but he remembered what Kirby and Ralph told him earlier that night...

"Kodi and Dusty came back from their date, and Kodi had blood all over his muzzle!"

So they were dating. Balto wasn't entirely surprised - they had always meshed well together, both out of and in the harness. What irked him slightly was that, despite the odd public nuzzle here and there, neither Kodi nor Dusty mentioned their union since their return. Balto teased him about it, and while Kodi didn't outright deny it, he certainly didn't affirm it. Granted, there wasn't a whole lot of time between their arrival, the nap, and the party, but something that momentous warranted at least a passing mention. Balto felt an odd sensation that his son, who shared everything with him, didn't share this. He didn't like it - it reminded him of his feud with Aleu, and the morning he awoke in his boat without his daughter.

"Next," he whispered softly, "Kodi and Dusty went on a date last night." He couldn't help but smile as he said it out loud, despite the pained sensation that reverberated from his words. "Just... act surprised if they say something, OK?"

Dusty smiled, looking as Kodi came up. She was glad to see him enjoying the part, or at least APPEARING to. She was personally glad that she was able to put her traumatic experience behind her and move forward normally. Before talking, she got some jerky. She noticed Fang, dog he was, just stared at the jerky, waiting for them to have their fill. She nudged some to him. "Go on, there's plenty."

Dusty then looked to Kodi and gave him a nuzzle. "Well, me and Fang were talking about it and figured something out that might actually work in his favor," she said, smiling. "He's been surviving in the wilderness all this time, he's got better resistance in the weather and knows how to navigate it well," she explained. "He's also got wolfish paws, which is another plus. Those are things that could really help him out."

Fang merely set quietly and ate his jerky. He blushed a little at the praise, being...well, Fang. "Well, I need to learn to run well, but yeah, I've got a decent sense of navigating it...I'm still alive anyway."

---

Jenna looked over at Dusty as Kodi returned. She smiled at the nuzzle. "Well, she just nuzzled him, so that supports that," she said, giving Balto one of her own. "But that doesn't exactly explain their behavior totally...But they seem happy together, so that can't be why they're acting strange," she admitted, watching Dusty's body language and Kodi's. They didn't seem awkward near each other at all, in fact they were sitting closer together than normal.

"It doesn't seem Dusty's...uh...in season either," Sally pointed out, a little awkwardly. "So we can count nerves about that too...Maybe its just this monster business and all, that's enough to get anyone spooked."

Jenna nodded. "It's why I'm glad you're on the boat with Balto. Even Bears don't tangle with skunks...Still, their route was changed to avoid its turf...But it does make sense it'd unnerve them."

Kodi nodded in agreement when Dusty spoke, looking down at Fang's larger-than-average paws again. Like she had said, it was apparent that he had been out in the wild for a good length of time - when Fang moved, revealing his wolfish pads, Kodi could see signs of scarring and callouses.

"Both very good points," he said, his tongue picking at a rather persistent piece of jerky that had lodged itself in his teeth. "I took more after my mother when it came to my physical features, but I inherited a bit of grip from Balto's side of the family. Not much, mind you, but every little bit helps."

Kodi sighed deeply, the spicy tang of the various meats wafting to and fro from where Fang had exposed the juicy center. His mouth watered, and his continued scraping with his tongue couple with the saliva lubricant finally freed the bit of jerky that had become incrementally more irritating. He swallowed it, the stringy bit having had almost all of the flavor wicked away from it.

"However, once this route get straightened out, you shouldn't need to worry too much about grip and survival. It becomes a routine," he explained. "Unless you have to make a detour that has you running off of cliffs, you should be good to go," he joked, only dimly aware that they had, in fact, nearly run off a cliff only yesterday. "You'll have the team at your back regardless. They won't let anything happen to you, especially once you've trained up and earned your place."

Kodi fidgeted at the mention of the word "training." More specifically, at the connection to the trainer. His curiosity got the better of him.

"Hey, I have to ask... how is training with Balto - my dad, I mean?" Kodi could already hear the answer before Fang even said it - "It's great!". He was sure that it was. But really, Kodi wanted specifics.

"Like... what sort of stuff have you been up to? How has he been exercising you? Does he exercise with you?"

Kodi stopped himself before he went in a full on interrogation, allowing the undoubtedly overwhelmed wolfdog before him a chance to answer.

--------------------------------------

Balto's face grew warm, lowering his head when Sally made mention of Dusty's heat cycle. It was entirely foolish of him to think that Kodi, a likable if somewhat naive, dog would remain without a companion. He was lead dog on a sled team, strong, and healthy. Balto was just unsure of how Kodi would handle parenting. Really, Balto was unsure of how he himself would take to being a grandparent, if he wasn't already. Seeing as the pups would actually be able to see him made the difference.

"Ahem..." he cleared his throat, looking at the two mothers in front of him, inhaling deeply to hopefully regain his composure. "Yes, I'm sure that they are probably on edge from that creature."

He looked at Dusty, Kodi, and Fang. They all appeared to be pretty happy, though Kodi had a somewhat frantic look about him as he spoke to Fang. Indeed, Dusty and he were sitting quite close to each other. But a relaxed look was to be expected given the atmosphere.

"Sally," he started, watching Fang chewing on his jerky quietly. "You know you're always welcome on my boat, and I love having the company. But, if you could, would you like to stay with Kodi and his teammates inside where it's warm?" Balto had a feeling that Sally and Fang both have been denied a comfortable temperature to rest in for far too long. And if Fang was to get more healthy, it would be in his best interest to be as well rested as possible when afforded the opportunity. However, Balto also knew that Fang would never leave his mother out in the cold while he relished a healthy warmth.

"I'm just putting that out there - the way you dealt with Saber, I'm sure the others would have no qualms with having you around," he added, in case she had any doubts.

Fang listened to the more experienced wolfdog explain how his paads could help. He let it stroke his ego a tiny bit, but not enough to change his normal demeanor. It felt good to know he was a step closer and the leader of the team he wanted to join saying something going for him helped a good bit.

However, he then blinked as he asked about his training. He thought back to his earlier training with Balto. "Well, he taught me...kinda everything...I needed to learn almost everything from scratch but he was a good teacher. I also did a ton of running. He made it look so easy, I was left worn out," he explained, looking a bit mortified at the fact what was just a normal work out for Balto had left him worn out and exhausted. "I'm still a bit sore honestly. But it does feel good to be a bit better than I was..."

Sally smiled. "I appreciate your concern, Balto, but humans don't accept a stray dog a lot better than a wild skunk. Our defense is pretty infamous and a lot of people don't want to risk tangling with a skunk," she explained, making note of how the dogs still seemed nervous of her, particularly after she skunked the town tough guy. They weren't afraid of her, but they definitely didn't want to risk startling her.

"I don't think that their musher would like finding a skunk living with his dogs very much. Plus, me being there makes your mate more relaxed if you and Boris have me out there with you, and that's a good thing, isn't it?"
