I wasn't sure where to put this, so mods feel free to move it if you wish.
I'm sure most of us have heard about the internet censorship, if not read about it here:
https://www.google.com/landing/takeaction/This page doesn't give a whole lot of information, but I'm sure there are other sites that could easily be found by typing in "internet censorship" into Google.
I personally think this is a very distasteful way of going about the issue. Their main reason for this is to stop the spread of online piracy, and I see their intentions. But this is a bit ridiculous. The government is talking about completely shutting down Google and other worldwide popular search engines and websites. To me, that would mean shutting down every website that used the word "piracy" in any way, shape or form. Or at least, that's what it seems like they want to do.
What I think they should do is use targeted shut-downs; finding specific places that advertise or sell pirated items (or even better, locate the people involved through their computers) and shut down just the few ruining it for the rest of us.
What I'd like to know is, what are your thoughts on it? Do you believe that this takes away basic freedom rights? Do you think this is a good or bad idea? Why?
If you are against the idea of censoring the web, the link above includes a petition you can sign if you just give your name, email, and zip code. It's that simple.
Thanks for reading and please let me know of your thoughts below.
