Since there has been an obscene amount of Type B art theives (theives of style and characters) I'm going to show you what kind of art IS accepted (here and pretty much anywhere).

What is NOT accepted:

OFF TOPIC ART IS NO LONGER ACCEPTED.

http://www.anycities.com/user1/ghostofdawn/arttheft.html wrote:
1-- Taking someone's picture, editing out any copyright or signature and claiming it as your own.

EXAMPLE:

2-- Copying someone else's picture.

This includes copying styles. Using other artists for references is ONLY okay if A) you give them credit and B) you stop using their art as a crutch and go your own way. [size=18]((NOTE: Any simple poses such as standing are nothing to worry about. Copying the more complex poses like this one and posting it without citation is prohibited.)

4-- Finding fanart on the net and posting it on your site.

This includes using OFFICIAL art found on other sites, which is just as ILLEGAL to steal. This also includes drawing pictures straight from screenshots [size=18]((NOTE: It is accepted to use a screenshot as a reference for proportions, but should also be mentioned what site you got the screenshot reference from (using citation)))
and also RENDERED SCREENSHOTS.

ANY OF THESE TYPES OF ART THEFT CAN BE COMPLETELY AVOIDED, IF YOU ASK THE ORIGINAL ARTIST FOR PERMISSION.

EXAMPLES ON WHAT NOT TO DO:

You: Can I use your art for my site?
Artist: *no response*
You: *uses it anyway*

---

You: Can I use one of your characters?
Artist: No.
You: *uses it anyway*

---

EXAMPLE ON WHAT TO DO:

You: Can I use one of your drawings? I promise to give you credit.
Artist: Yes.
You: Thank you *uses drawings and makes it known who the original artist is*

You: Can I use your characters?
Artist: No.
You: Ok. Thanks anyway.

---

See? Not that hard. Not only will both you AND the artist be happy, but you will be APPLAUDED for giving credit where it's due!

This topic has been supplied for example purposes ONLY. If there are any rules I've missed, let me know.

Yes! Yes! Yes! I am so glad to see this topic :thumleft: Finally it's shown up! It shows clearly what and what not to do. Now there is no excuse "I didn't know that", everybody should read it before drawing and posting anything.

Good topic, that's exactly what I meant, thanks.
Although, there's one I don't agree with :

http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g184/ ... led008.jpg

The drawing should be accepted, because it's not traced directly from a screenshot, but a reference. Many people who begin in drawing, take screenshots as a reference to get the proportions right, etc...As long as it is a SCREENSHOT from the films, this should be accepted. I don't think I've written that I didn't accept this type of drawing, in the rules. It's a pretty innocent thing.

Besides, I've done that myself

Copying a screenshot is actually a form of art theft. It's basically the same thing as copying official art work (because in any 2-D animation, something had to be drawn out on paper.) But I will mention that referencing one for proportions is ok, but copying directly from a screenshot is theft. It is actually a common mistake to think it's not.

If I may add to this.

I agree with both Cat and Steet...BUT

Keep in mind that there might be the rare chance of someone making and thinking they are doing a completely original artwork when in fact it has the hint of someone elses. Can only get so many angles of a wolf or husky. With 50-100 fanarts everyday, any new angle is welcomed...but probably rare by now.
LOL, I try to remain as original as I can, trying to incorporate dragons, industry, or trains in someway with a wolf.

I only say that to in a sense save myself...if that day dare does come, I dont go through every single artwork on this site just to make sure Im not doing someone elses idea. I would dislike someone if someone copied one of my artworks, I would hate that feeling if it was myself thats done it. Kind of like stealing from your coworkers...its something you just dont do.

I agree with the screenshot that Cat mentions, the only problem with that is, is this. Universal did practially about every angle Balto could be put in. Well, the rated G ones, and lets not go there. So to remain 100% legal, I guess one couldnt draw Balto...since he is the property of universal! :(

Oh well, reality is setting in! Time to draw something...not of Balto...I guess.
