Hello.
In response to the growing concern of several members, I believe it is necessary to address the subject of fanfic content, and I will break down the mentioned issues, and perhaps a few of my own:
Cursing: Yes, I understand that people don't say 'Rats, foiled again!' any more, but 'bad language' should be used in moderation. Just use your best judgment. It should be used to convey a very strong point or emotion, not just because you could think of anything else to have the person (or dog, or wolf) say. Depending on the level or frequency, cursing may warrent a warning in the summary.
Violence: Again, moderation. Yes, I remember the days when a guy was shot, but the last thing you saw on screen was his expression. No blood, no gore, nothing. Granted, writers may want to use blood as a 'tear-jerker' (I have), but they should probably not go into details about entrails or anything of the sort. This is not to say violence in a fic is bad. I only suggest that it be used only enough to convey what happened. And, again, the level or frequency of violence or blood may warrent a warning in the summary.
Romantic Relationships: This subject matter has grown in both popularity and controversy. Sure, there are plenty of people who may want to read about love, and as long as description diminishes after kissing. (Avoid going into detail about what characer X and character Z did after they ran off to 'chase a few sticks by the moonlight.' This is, or started out as, a kid-friendly forum.)
Also, gay and incest fics have made increasing appearances, and although they are a legitimate and (at least somewhat) realistic topic, I feel they should not become the fall-back topic for every writer who runs out of ideas. (I've been seeing more and more of these fics with less and less story telling as they kept coming...)
Branch out!
Write about family fights, sibling rivalries, children who run away, the 'Romeo and Juliet of Nome,' I don't care! Tell me what happened between the first and second movies, or between the second and third, or make up your own sequels.
All I ask is that you use your best judgment, and have fun.
-LWf
EDIT: Anyone with a conern or question can post it here.
EDIT2: For those who may think otherwise, these are only suggestions that are to be used as guidlines along with one's own common sense. These are not rules.

Much respect and thanks, Lonewolf! You really took the bull by the horns here, and made a stand for something decent and moderate. Very very commendable!

I agree with that. It's so annoying how many people flam fanfic writters just because they don't like what the fic's about.

Same here. That's why I always warn the reader before hand in the summary and again when they begin to read the story. But some people just don't get it, do they?
But I think everything was well said, LW_F! Hopefully other writers will understand and follow these rules.

I agree with the whole idea of implementing a policy like this for the simple fact that it should make for a better vibe among our writers on here and should help mix up some of the storys posted on here.. annnnd
I also REALLY apreiciate (Spelling? lol) the fact that the mods are doing a good job maintaining this section and I just thank you very much indeed!
GONE!

I agree as well lonewolf.
I think that as far as "rules" go, there are none in writing, every writer is their own person, but, if a fanific is going to have things in it that may offend people (cursing, blood, gore, alternative lifestyles, ext.) then they should at least warn the reader before hand.
I've written some violent fanfics, but I always write out a warning in the beginning, telling people what's in it.
If people still read it and get offended then that's just stupid, end of story.

Quote: I agree on alot of this, but still, nobody is considering the people who like violence, incest, and whatever. What you're using is 'crowd control' as I call it.Go by your basic rules and use it on everybody,no matter what one particular person may say.I go with the idea that people who complain about incest, homosexuality, and violence even though there's a big warning in capitals and bold print need to be dealt with differently.Maybe steet could post a notice that says 'Some writing may offend some viewers. If this may offend you,you don't need to flame the author for it,especially if you read it KNOWING it would offend you.'
Exactly. It's easier to not read something than to read something, so if there's violence and stuff in a certain fanfic, it's directed towards the audience who LIKES violence in stories! And its the same thing with fics about incest, homosexuality, etc.
We obviously can't make everyone happy, so we may as well make ourselves happy first and write whatever WE think fits best. And if those people who don't like it, they don't have to read it. Just don't complain about a certain fanfic's content just because you "didn't like it" Come up with a REAL reason (ill let you figure those out on your own, ive narrowed it down enough)
Or better yet JUST DONT READ IT. PERIOD. I don't care for incest fics (anymore) so I just don't read them! And look how happy everyone is! Nobody has any right to take away an author (or artist's) creativity jsut because it doesn't "suit their standards" that's being completely selfish.
But as long as there is a fair warning on all fics containing potentially offensive material, people should not have a problem with it.
And keeping in mind that this is a kid's site, even kids have the choice to choose what they themselves want to read. If they read adult-contented fanfics, when they're not supposed to, then that's their fault and curiosity. But even R-rated fics should have their limits. But even so, if we do that, we're depriving kids from their own emotions, be it disturbance, fear, etc. And I don't think that's right, so I'm basically sticking with what I said the first time.

I agree with Cat, up to a point if you dont like what they are saying dont read it!
They give you a warning and if you still read it and go to them and say things like "I didn't like that there was a gay relationship" it makes you sound dumb.
I think really the stories should go to PG 14 and cut off from there.

I'm a war writer of course (the only one who writes pure war fictions yet trying another things *bows* of course LoneWolf Fanwriter was the first who made cool war stories etc you are my idol mate jk
anyway I often use violence sometimes love which is barly in use and noticed in my fanfics. I pay attention to warnings a lot. love ones they were weird but me and I and my friend liked Juuchan's stories *bows to her as well* you are my idol in love ones mate
So if can't use violence and I use warnings...(yet no one reads so they are useless for me haha pr0) and I pay attention to them, yet if I feel it stupid it's my fault not writers one

I'm fairly certain that steet will not allow any 'bad' art on the site.
Sadly, fanfics can hide bad content in some cases, but there's no way to hide 'bad' drawings. Thank goodness.
Should anything like that get onto the site, steet and the art mods will certainly here what I have to say...and it won't be very positive.
And yes, it seems like this site is turning slowly into a more teen-friendly site, but I must add that for the lack of more young Balto fans, it may stay that way... *sigh*
Again, all I ask is that writers use moderation, common sense, warnings, and prepare for any moderatly young readers.
Sarafina Fanatic wrote: If I ever decide to write a fanfic,I'll certainly obey every rule.*salutes*
Well, I'm glad you're willing to adjust for any younger readers that may come along, but I figure they're more like guidelines any how.
