Although Leonhard Seppala had several outstanding lead dogs over the years, he stated on a number of occasions that Togo was the best one. And he also made it known that the Seppala family had another dog who was their collective overall favorite. Her name was Nellie. She is one of the foundation dams of the Siberian Husky breed.
Nellie was a fairly young girl when she was acquired by the Seppalas in late 1913. She ran on Leonhard's 1914 All Alaska Sweepstakes team. There are some pictures of her in a couple of publications. According to Leonhard, when the Seppala family went to Seattle in late 1921 they took Nellie with them as none of them could bear to be away from her. Leonhard went on to visit Norway and Nellie stayed with Constance and Sigrid in Seattle.
Charlotte Cameron wrote about a couple of her encounters with Nellie in the summer of 1919 in her book A Cheechako in Alaska and Yukon (1920). She tells about meeting Nellie for the first time at the Little Creek section of the Pioneer Mining Company. Another time was when Leonhard Seppala gave Miss Cameron a sled dog ride from Little Creek to Nome. Togo is also mentioned.
