What Does It Mean To Be A Hero?A Roleplay Story By Windancer and Black RosePlotSixteen Years Ago...Six couples living in the modern day world are all expecting children that they cannot afford to have. Desperate to find a way to care for their growing families, they search for any means of earning money. A scientist named Anthony Lawrence approaches them with an offer any sane parent would decline in a heartbeat: their unborn children for a large sum of money in their bank account every year starting as soon as they sign on the dotted line. But these parents are on the brink of madness induced by lack of money and this kind of annual fund is too good to pass up... Present Day...Seven junior students attending Mountain Valley High School are called into the office on a bland Tuesday morning. What they don't know is that this day will change their lives forever. Waiting for them is Dr. Anthony Lawrence who tells the teens that he knows about the powers that they have tried to keep secret. He asks them to come to his lab where he can help them strengthen their powers and become super heroes for their town. Beyond excited at the prospect of heroism, the teens immediately agree. Their parents, who have had no contact with Lawrence since he first injected them with a strange glowing serum, were hopeful to never have to face the consequences of their rash decision all those years ago, but now they must face their children travelling to Lawrence's lab almost every day, pretending not to know that something strange is going on there. While the teens are being trained to fight villains and begin catching criminals, they have no idea that Lawrence is planning to use them for his own purposes. Some of them want out of this hero deal, but Lawrence won't let them leave and he's willing to do anything to make them stay... The Future...Uncertain... Characters ------------------------------------------ Full Name: Rose Marguerite Lancaster Nickname(s): Rosie Age: 16 Gender: female Power: Rose is a shapeshifter with the power to change either just one part of her body (such as changing eye color or hair length) or completely transform herself into another shape (anything from an animal to an object). However, her newness to the power has caused lots of issues with controlling it. When envisioning what she wants to change, it often doesn't come out like she wants. She also has some issues with controlling her appearance when she's emotional such as eyes turning blue when upset or her nails turning into claws when she's angry. The hardest thing about her power is that it isn't instantaneous. Not only does she have to really concentrate or be really emotional in order to successfully transform at all, it is also mostly a slow and sometimes painful process. As she practices, it becomes faster and easier but always as exhausting and physically tolling on her muscles. She spends most of her days with muscle pains and soreness, especially the more she uses it. Personality: At school, Rose is mostly just known as the pretty blond girl who often answers questions wrong when called on in class and stares blankly with a slightly agape mouth during most conversations. On the inside, though, Rose is actually fairly book smart and rather more naive than her wardrobe would suggest. She hates small talk, feeling too awkward to stumble through a simple conversation, so she chooses to ignore it. She doesn't want to draw attention towards herself by being the smart pretty girl and instead just fills in her role as the dumb blond in order to blend in with the social order. In actuality, she is a cunning introvert who prefers the company of a pile of books to a group of people. Along with her mask of stupidity, she also tends to cover up her emotions, though they tend to leak out then explode at the worst of times. Her true spitfire nature shines through when pushed over the edge and the side of her that shines through is guaranteed to shock anyone watching. History: Rose's parents were not poorly off when they got pregnant, both coming from middle class families. However, after finding out they were having twins and then both of them losing their jobs, the due date for their babies seemed to be coming in too fast. Pushed into panic that they would not be able to afford the hospital fees let along food, clothing, and diapers for their children, they were very quick in taking up Lawrence's offer. Not long after Rose and her twin brother, Ronan, were born, their father found a job that paid even better than the last. Once the siblings started day care, their mother also found a well-paying job. Many years and a couple promotions later, the Lancasters don't have any issues with money. All of Lawrence's money has been going straight into a college fund for the twins where their mother and father can try to forget about the money. Attempting to make up for their misjudgment all those years ago, Rose is often showered with gifts and never has to ask for something twice. While this could make a little girl into a spoiled brat, Rose got used to it pretty fast and, while she does sometimes use it to her advantage, she doesn't indulge her whims too often. In middle school, Rose was awkward and skinny with blemished skin and braces, so her role as the A+ student fit her well, but the summer between 8th and 9th grade, Rose lost her braces, her pimples, and her bony stature. All of a sudden, she was turning heads in a way she never could before, and the stares of shock and amusement when she answered a question right in Algebra that first day were something she'd never experienced before. She found out quickly that people didn't take well to her acting outside of the role that her appearance handed to her, and after only a week or two of bullying words, Rose went on a shopping trip with her mother and changed not only her wardrobe but her personality as well. Since then, she's grown into her new role well but still struggles to hide her true nature every day. Appearance: http://sabrinacichy.deviantart.com/art/pure-III-319579759Full Name: Ronan Fabien Lancaster Nicknames: Ro Age: 16 Gender: male Power: Ronan can produce a forcefield that can be used in several different ways. It can create a shield against most forces, both physical and supernatural, that can be a sort of wall. At first, he can only produce on to protect himself and those behind him, but he will learn to project it to block anyone anywhere within sight. He can also use it as a sort of wave of pressure that can push away almost anything. This is often brought on by emotion, forcing someone he doesn't want to talk to anymore to slid back several feet away from him, but as he gain control, he can use it as a sort of rough telekineses. While he can't actually control objects with his mind, he can use his forcefield to push things with the same strength but with the lack of precision that real telekineses provides. Using his power tends to take a toll on Ronan, making him feel fatigued after using it for too long. Although throwing around one or two forcefields is easy, each one takes a little more of his strength until he can't stand up or even stay conscious. His emotions also really control his forcefield; he can't use it against someone that he trusts and he often physically pushes away with his power when he's pushing them away emotionally. Personality: Ronan comes off as super cold-hearted and out-for-no-one-but-himself person. He does not have much of a filter between his mind and his mouth, blurting out every rude and insulting thought that passes through his brain. He is a very logical thinker and tries very hard to act in the most impersonal but effective way that he can. Unfortunately, he is not a natural logical action-taker, and he feels for anyone that gets hurt because of his decisions so he tries very hard not to acknowledge them (or at least their pain). He deals with a lot of rash impulses that he struggles to keep under control and therefore appears to others to be indecisive and two-faced, saying one thing then doing another, leaning towards one decision than doing the complete opposite. It can be rather confusing to anyone who doesn't understand him, but if someone really paid attention, they would see him being clearly torn between what is logically best and what his instincts (and emotions) tell him is best. History: Ronan, much like his twin sister, had a rough time with puberty in middle school, both being extremely scrawny with a mouth full of braces and a face full of zits. Unlike his quiet bookworm sister who blended into the background, Ronan always had a knack for standing out and wanting to be noticed. Unfortunately, his attempts at being the star player in any sport (and he tried nearly all of them) failed every time. His competitive nature, while seemingly good for sports, turned out to put him against the teammates he should get along with or get too worked up about losing any events that his father finally cut him off from individual sports like track. He dabbled in music but struggled without the natural talent and gave up on first guitar then drums then, finally, piano. During this time, he also tried the punk look, but with his large round glasses and golden blonde hair, no one took him seriously. During all his searching for an identity, Ronan dealt with a lot of bullying from larger and tougher boys, not having a lot of friends throughout his middle school and early high school years. Even when he tried to fill in the smart kid role (which he also failed at), the bullying never seemed to stop. The summer after his freshman year, Ronan finally hit the growth spurt that evened out his gangly limbs and filled in his skinny form. Though still lean, Ronan now had a height that deterred most of the bullying he had been suffering through for years. He found a love of running (turning down a spot on the track team mostly out of spite) and piano (though he still mostly sucked at it). With the confidence boost from the lack of bullying, Ronan had a few peaceful months as a loner until his parents discovered his smoking habit. They immediately stopped just handing him out money when he asked, and Ronan felt desperate to get his hands on another pack. When he saw the opportunity to rob a scrawny little freshman, a kid just a year younger than himself, of his lunch money, just as cliche as when he had had it done to him, he couldn't pass it up. This was just the start of a problem that would grow throughout the next year until he was well-known for being the dangerous, possibly violent bad boy. Though most of the most infamous rumors are false, Ronan doesn't exactly have a squeaky clean background. However, he's not nearly as scary as his scowl would have you believe. Appearance: http://www.deviantart.com/art/Jamie-II-134179677Full Name: Andrew Robert Deveroux Nickname: none Age: 16 Gender: male Power: Andrew has a super strength that allows him to do the obvious things like lifting extremely heavy objects and throwing said objects across long distances. Some other advantages that this power give him include being rock solid, nearly unmovable and insensitive to small pains or less sensitive to large pains. He is less likely to be injured because of his strengthened skin and muscles, but that does not at all make him invincible. While his power doesn't seem to have any draw backs like draining of energy or extreme concentration, he does sometimes struggle to do anything with a delicate touch and can get frustrated when a gentle hand is needed. Personality: Andrew is the boy who can do no wrong, whether he's out on the field or inside the classroom. He has a remarkable knack for acing school while also balancing his responsibilities in student council (where he is rumored to be the next president) and on the lacrosse team (where he is practically guaranteed captain next year). With all of his activities, Andrew has trained himself to be extremely detail-orientated and organized. His entire day is written out in his planner before he does anything. He can be a bit stubborn about sticking to the plan, but with an etiquette teacher as a mother, he is always the gentlemen when it comes to a disagreement. What Andrew lacks most in his life is passion. He tends to do exactly what his parents ask of him, feeling a responsibility to make them proud since they saved him from a life of foster homes, but he's lost a lot of who he is. He has no idea what he wants to do with his life and this fact barrels down on him at the worst of times, breaking through his calm demeanor to reveal a lost little boy who feels empty inside. History: Andrew's biological parents were young when he was born and neither of their families gave very much support to the young couple. His mother dropped out of high school, which made finding a decent job nearly impossible, and his father, a freshman in college, dropped out after his parents refused to help finance him anymore. They were desperate for a miracle, so when Lawrence offered them the money that would help them survive on their own, they didn't even hesitate to say yes. Unfortunately, the couple relied heavily on the pay days from the doctor and never bothered to return to school or to get better jobs. After only a few months with baby Andrew, they decided a baby was too expensive and faked an abuse call in order to get Child Services to step in and take the infant away. Andrew was sentenced to a life in foster care until good luck finally befell the poor child. A worker at Child Services had a friend looking into adoption and was able to arrange Andrew's adoption into the Deveroux family. Andrew couldn't have asked for a better family; they were wealthy and well-respected and, most of all, loving. As Andrew grew up, he saw his older cousins going to elite graduate schools or heading off to LA or drafting into sports teams, so he felt a natural ambition to be like them, to prove that he fit in with the family even if he wasn't born into it. Appearance: http://mwis.modelwire.com/webCS/frc/IMG/d8d6d352-7274-4fc6-bca3-c326d07037c6/F75CA011-B416-4E7C-BEBF-EC8D7152C96E_LG.JPGFull Name: Seosaimhthin ("So sa vhin") Aodhon ("Ee on") Flynn Preferred Name: Sosie Age: 16 Gender: female Role: Normal Student Power: Simply put, she is an empath. She can feel the emotions of others as if they were her own, which results in strange mood swings depending on who she is in a room with. Although she can't exactly read minds, she can sense how actions affect a person's mood which is close enough. As her powers strengthen, she learns she can also slightly influence a person's decision. Although she can't control them, she can sort of communicate through her mind and bring out a certain emotion in them. Using her power often gives her a headache, though, and she tries to block out other people's emotions as much as she can. Personality: Sosie is the definition of a sweetheart. She never seems to have a bad thing to say about anyone and it takes quite a lot to get her angry or even annoyed. She is patient and kind, but she is also very shy and will only speak to a stranger if they approach her first. She is not the bravest soul and tends to freeze up when scared. She enjoys time by herself to read and write and sketch and sing and compose. She is a very creative spirit who enjoys all sorts of art and is rather talented at almost anything she tries such as drawing and playing instruments and writing poetry but she shines above the rest when it comes to painting. However, she keeps most of her talent to herself to avoid the attention it draws to her, often using the pen name "Sarah Jane" on anything she creates. History: Sosie's parents, high school sweethearts and the perfect football captain/head cheerleader couple, always focused more on athletics than anything else when it came to their children. Sosie's four older brothers had no problem fitting in to this mind set as Cian excelled at baseball and Jarlath dominated the swim team and Phelan rose above the rest of the soccer players and Seamus followed his father's footsteps in football. Always in the shadow of her brothers' glory, Sosie never even tried to compete. As a child, she was always too distracted by the grass on the field to pay attention to the game and she was never dedicated to ballet or gymnastics enough to continue after middle school. In high school, she spends most of her time in the art room since she doesn't have much of a studio at home. While her parents don't discourage her from doing what she loves, they just don't understand their daughter's passion enough to know how to give her the proper support. Sosie doesn't seem to mind, though, preferring her parents to gush over her brothers (all now in college) then to dote over her latest masterpiece. However, Sosie doesn't fully realize that the main reason her parents act so odd around her is because of Lawrence's offer. They never planned on having a fifth child and, with money strained already, didn't think they could afford it. Now, her parents often wander if it is their fault she doesn't fit in with the rest of the family and cannot handle their guilt enough to truly embrace her uniqueness Appearance: http://malvina-frolova.deviantart.com/art/Russian-beauty-178670008Other: If you couldn't tell by her name, her parents are originally from Ireland and she often uses Irish slang in her speech. She also speaks with a slight Irish accent where all her th's are pronounced as t's.

Full Name: Jacelynn Miranda Taylor Nickname(s): Jace, Jay Age: 16 Gender: Female Power: Jace has superspeed, able to go slightly faster than the speed of sound. As a result, her body temperature is higher and her heart rate is faster than an ordinary human's would be, even at rest. She needs to eat a lot in order to survive, because her metabolism also works at a fast speed. Though she can certainly function in everyday society, her mind wants to work as fast as her feet can go and it takes focus and concentration to slow it down. Personality: Jace is very friendly and outgoing, not hesitating in the slightest when it comes to meeting new people and talking to strangers. She likes to make friends and is very much a social butterfly. Though she doesn't tend to form deep, meaningful relationships with someone, she has a very extensive network of people she knows; it wouldn't be surprising if she knew the names of most everyone in the school. She is impulsive and impatient (though she's smart enough to know when something shouldn't be rushed into blindly) and hates admitting when she doesn't know something or when she's hurt. She would much rather fake it until she made it than ask for help. However, she will eagerly offer her own assistance to others. Background: Before she was born, her dad was unemployed, which led them to selling their baby; they had no money. All of their bills were behind, and they were living on what little food they had. After she was born, things started looking up. Encouraged by the sum of money they were given, her parents started looking more thoroughly for a job, and her dad finally got one at a small pharmaceutical company, and gradually starting working his way up. He became friends with the owner, and when the owner decided to retire, it was her dad that got promoted to head of the company. Though not rich, they were very well-off and the sum of money received from Anthony Lawrence only added to that. Jace's dad is rarely home now, due to the increased workload, and her mom doesn't play much of an active role in her life. Appearance: http://i48.tinypic.com/316udc1.jpgFull Name: Louis Rayford Markus Nickname(s): Lou (though he despises it) Age: 16 Gender: Male Power: Louis can manipulate his own molecular structure, making himself impenetrable or a puddle of liquid with enough concentration. He has to focus, because it tends to reflect his emotions, hardening when angry and melting when startled. Personality: Louis tends to be rather quiet, especially around strangers, concealing a majority of his emotions behind a nearly impenetrable mask. He opens up a bit more to the people that he has grown to know and trust explicitly, but he is very selective about who those people are. Not the best at social situations, he isn't a good candidate for giving advice, but he is an excellent listener to his friends when they need it. To those truly in need, he is very kind and considerate, but that takes certain situations to bring out; he's a very private person generally who dislikes revealing practically anything about himself. Background: Not financially well-off to begin with, it wasn't difficult to accept Dr. Anthony Lawrence's offer. Unfortunately, Louis' mother died only minutes after giving birth, leaving his father to raise their son by himself. Not prepared for this - financially or emotionally - he was never very close to Louis. They have moments where they seem to click and bond, but they are infrequent and Louis has become adept at taking care of himself. Appearance: http://i49.tinypic.com/2aepfft.jpgFull Name: Annalee Elizabeth Hughes Nickname(s): Anna Age: 16 Gender: Female Power: Anna can control her own gravity, enabling her to fly or hover to her heart's content. With enough concentration, she can do the same to anything she touches, but that takes quite a bit of effort so she normally doesn't bother. Controlling her own, however, quickly becomes like a second nature to her. Personality: Anna is an optimist by nature, always looking for that sometimes elusive silver lining. She isn't in denial about the evils of the world - she just prefers to acknowledge the goodness in it instead. She bottles up any negative emotion she might feel to be processed at a later date whenever she is alone, determined to remain strong for anyone else who may be suffering. Because of her optimism, she appears to be a bit naive at times, but she isn't really. She does act younger than her actual age sometimes though, and is never afraid to speak her mind (unless it risks hurting other people's feelings). She wants everyone to be happy, and tends to blame herself if they're not and will do everything in her power to fix it. Background: Anna's mother was a single mom that wasn't prepared to have a baby at all. Poor and unemployed, she didn't hesitate to accept Dr. Anthony Lawrence's offer. As soon as she saw Anna, though, she felt guilty and sought to run away from that feeling. Anna was given to her Aunt Jenny to be taken care of, a wonderful woman who encouraged Anna to be herself and be kind to others. Anna's mom has never made any attempts to contact her daughter since. Ooc:// Finally finished up getting those characters finished! Sorry it took so long, but I wanted to make sure that I got them right. Bic:// Rose pulled her Mustang into the school parking lost, ironically right next to her twin brother's beat up Chevy truck. While she knew that the tree-huggers would like nothing more then to beat the Lancaster siblings to death with their organic juice bottles, Rose felt little guilt for driving to school separately. His constant switching between classical music and death metal drove her up a wall at home; she could barely imagine enduring that torture in a contained space for twenty minutes. As she walked up the obnoxiously long cement stairs that lead to the front doors, she spotted her brother just a few feet away in the five foot green space their school attempted to pass for a courtyard. Ronan sat against the single tree with a cigarette rolling back and forth between his fingers in rhythm with the song in his head phones. Rose briefly wondered why Ronan had shown up to school before her, a phenomenon not normally seen, but when her mind brought up drug dealing, she decided not to think about it any longer. If her brother had added illegal substances to his nasty tobacco addiction, she would rather stay in the dark about it. She wasted little time at her locker, ducking into her homeroom before most of the students had even wondered into the hallways. She had a physics test that afternoon, and while she had spent a good four hours re-examining her notes the previous night, she wanted to look over a few of the more difficult equations. She sat at her desk in the back corner, opening her large text book while pulling a Vogue magazine onto her lap for when the other students trickled into the room. The first to arrive was Sosie, who sat completely opposite Rose in the front row and on the other side of the room. She barely glanced away from the book in her hand to even notice Rose studying in the back of the room, tearing her eyes away from the words only long enough to seat herself. Sosie's ballet flat clad foot began tapping a few minutes after entering the classroom, and she felt a strangely confident anxiousness fill her as if she were about to do something difficult but knew she could do it well. It was a strange feeling to have while reading about two characters wittily confessing their love to each other while playing a video game. She tried to shake away the feeling, pausing from her book to think over whether she had some sort of presentation or test that day, but she couldn't remember anything of that nature being due. She took a deep breath to calm her racing heart, which seemed to helped a bit as she felt the anxiousness wane. She returned to her characters, who had just let both of their video game selves die while staring into each other's eyes, but she only reached the part where the boy cusses in surprise when the game announces Game Over before students rushed into the class room. She dog-eared the page before closing the book at the exact same time Rose shut her physics book and flipped her magazine open to a random page. Absentmindedly tapping her pen on the edge of her desk, Sosie kept her head slightly ducked to avoid any eye contact with the other students, but then her pen hit the desk a little too hard and flew out from between her fingers. She gasped as it soared in front of two boys crossing in front of her desk. She recognized Andrew Deveroux, of course, since who did't know who he was, but wasn't sure of the boy talking to him. They both halted reflexively in the way only athletes can, something she knew well from her brothers. "Sorry!" she squeaked, her hand covering her mouth in surprise. The brunette boy simply shrugged, barely even sparing a glance towards Sosie, but Andrew squatted down to grab the pen from the floor. "No big deal," Andrew said as he held the pen out to her with a kind smile. She hesitated in grabbing it, and when she did, she returned his smile with a quick grin that mostly resembled a grimace. Andrew walked with Brandon Catcher to their seats in the exact middle of the room, nodding at Brandon as he went on and on about how the lacrosse team would be so much better this year now that Mark Rover had graduated and Oliver Reeves moved up to varsity. "Have you seen that kid play? His defense is sick. We could use some defensive strength after Mark jacked up all our best plays last year. The other teams won't see it coming. Best of all? I can relax in the net instead of saving saving Marks a-" Brandon's comment was cut short by the loud tone of the bell. The whole classroom settled down into whispers as the principle's voice echoed through the school with the morning announcements. Andrew already had his planner out, matching up announced future events with the dates he had already written down. Brandon had turned his attention towards a poor desperate girl who would listen to anything Brandon had to mutter about the changes in cafeteria food and how much homecoming tickets would be that year. After an announcement that the student council meeting had been moved from Wednesday to Thursday, Andrew was too busy erasing and re-writing in his planner to pay much attention to the following announcement until he heard his name. "The following students are needed in the main office after the last announcement: Andrew Deveroux, Seo-sam-he-thin Flynn, Annalee Hughes, Ronan Lancaster, Rose Lancaster, Louis Markus, and Jacelynn Taylor. Please come to the main office after the last announcement." Andrew jerked his head towards the speaker as his name was called, caught unaware, and quickly reorganized his morning to include this detour. "Dude, what promotion are you up for now?" Brandon teased, but before Andrew could respond, the principal wished them all a good day and clicked off. "Guess I'm about to find out," Andrew said, standing up and gathering his book bag from the floor. He was the first out of the classroom with Sosie right on his heels. If not for her last name being called, she might have missed being named at all. Every teacher she had ever had always pronounced her name in a new and completely wrong way, but that was the first time someone had given the first 'h' in her name its own syllable. Sosie paused at her locker to grab her first period books, noticing Rose doing the same a few lockers down. Rose stuffed her books into her bag and turned from her locker to see Ronan strolling down the hall towards their homeroom. "Where you off to?" he asked with a raised eyebrow as he approached her. "Same place as you," she answered matter-of-factly, grabbing his arm and turning him around. "We're needed at the principal's office." As Rose led him down the hall way, he could only wonder what he had done now and how the hell he had let his sister get caught up in it.

Ooc:// It's fine. ^^
Jace spared a quick glance at her phone as it buzzed in her hand. She sighed as she noticed the contact name: William. Again. He was trying to get a party organized at his house while his parents were out of town for a week, but honestly, Jace wasn't interested. William was a jerk, and the thought of being in the same house as him and his friends for hours wasn't appealing in the slightest. For a few moments, she struggled to figure out a way to tell him this without being painfully rude, but quickly gave up. She slipped her phone back in her pocket, focusing her attention on the upcoming test she had in calculus.
She wasn't too awful at math, but Mr. Jenkins was known for giving out killer tests. And she had a book report due in two days. Maybe if she used her speed to do it all...her mom was leaving on a trip with friends tomorrow and wouldn't be back until Saturday. That meant there was no chance of her freaky - but admittedly kind of cool -superspeed being discovered, not since her dad was at work for so long. Of course, there wasn't of a chance of that anyway, since they almost never came into her room...
Pulling herself out of her thoughts, Jace glanced around the room for someone to talk to. She knew the names of most of the people in her homeroom, but didn't know much beyond that. Deciding to change that, she turned to face the person sitting to her left. She had wavy blonde hair and was bent over a notebook, a pencil scribbling against the page. Her name was...Amy? Emma? No, no, Anna. That was it.
"Anna?" she tried. The name must have been right, because the blonde girl raised her head and offered a small, friendly smile. "Hi, I'm Jace," she greeted.
"I know," Anna responded, the smile widening slightly. "You said hi to me when the school year began."
Jace cast her mind back for the memory, sheepishly remembering. "Right. Sorry. I guess sometimes things just slip my mind, you know?" Normally she was able to keep track of everyone, but it had been the beginning of the school year. That day had been one big blur of new faces and school assignments.
"It's fine," Anna assured. "I'm always forgetting things. At least, that's what my aunt says. I can't remember if that's true or not," she finished with a teasing wink.
Jace laughed, recognizing and acknowledging the joke. She turned her gaze back to the paper on Anna's desk. "What are you drawing?" she asked curiously.
"I'm writing, actually," Anna corrected kindly. "I draw in my green notebook. This one is for poems."
"Oh, you write poetry? Could I hear some?" Jace asked. Anna seemed open enough, so hopefully it wouldn't be as awkward as that one time she asked an art student and he turned bright red and clammed up, stammering away an apology for being an introvert and art being private.
Anna hummed, flipping a few paged back before clearing her throat. "Flowers bloom in spring/Bees buzz around the petals/Making the Earth sing." She met Jace's eyes again. "It's a haiku. A Japanese poem with 17 syllables," she explained.
"It was beautiful," Jace complimented. Poetry wasn't really her thing, but she had asked and there was no way she was about to insult it. Besides, it hadn't sounded too bad; it rhymed, anyway.
Anna flushed with pleasure. "Thank you," she smiled. "I really like your eyes, you know. They look sort of like the sky right before it rains."
Jace blinked, taken by surprise. Anna's voice rang with sincerity and kindness, but it wasn't often Jace got complimented like that. "Uh...thank you," she said, after a moment's pause. She flashed Anna a smile to let her know that she really did appreciate it. She would've returned the compliment, but the intercom system crackled to life and Jace turned her attention to the speakers.
The morning announcements were played throughout the school, slightly distorted by static, but still easily understandable. Louis sat, not really caring all that much. He wasn't involved in any extra curricular activities, so none of the announcements ever affected him. He only tuned back in when he heard his name.
"-Louis Markus, and Jacelynn Taylor. Please come to the main office after the last announcement."
Louis raised an eyebrow, confused. Why would he be called to the main office? He had decent grades, though they weren't stellar, and was never one to stick out much. That meant an honor society was probably out of the question. And since he wasn't in any clubs or sports...who knew? He supposed he would have to find out after the last announcement.
He waited until he heard the click that signalled the end of the principal's messages, sliding his bag onto his shoulder and making his way towards his locker. He grabbed the things he would need for his first class, putting everything else away. Hopefully this impromptu meeting wouldn't run for too long, though since Louis didn't even know what it was about, there was a chance it could, and homeroom didn't last for more than a few minutes after the announcements had ended.
He headed towards the principal's office, noticing a few other people already standing there. He could name a couple of them; Andrew, Jacelynn. And Ronan, but Louis only knew him through a bad reputation. It was rumored he was part of a Mexican gang and ran a school drug ring on the side. Louis wasn't quite sure what to believe (though he did doubt the Mexican gang) but either way it boiled down to one thing; Ronan was bad news. He found himself standing closer to a girl with wavy blond hair who was often sketching or doodling or something during homeroom. He didn't know her name, but she seemed nice enough.
Anna glanced over at the boy next to her. "I'm Anna," she greeted with a smile. She had noticed he was rather quiet and sat near the back; maybe he needed a friend? Well, she was friendly and always enjoyed new people to talk to. She wasn't about to pass up a possible opportunity. "I'm in your homeroom. What's your name?"
"Louis," he replied, voice quiet. It wasn't that he was shy, necessarily; he just wasn't very interested in talking to others. He would humor her for a little bit though; surely it wouldn't be too much longer until they were let into the principal's office and told what was going on.
She beamed. "It's nice to meet you, Louis. So, do you know why we're here?"
"No clue," Louis shrugged.
Anna frowned thoughtfully. "It's a bit strange, isn't it? Not actually knowing why we're here? I mean, we look like a pretty diverse group."
Louis silently agreed, but he didn't comment on it verbally. This entire situation did feel very, very strange.

Ronan leaned against the door frame of the main office's entrance, the door of which was still closed to keep out interruptions from the morning announces. He supposed that the secretary had forgotten to open it up again and that the automatic lock kept it sealed up from the outside. If they were going to call in students, the least they could do was make sure they could get into the office. Instead, Ronan was left in the cramped hallway with his sister and a redheaded girl who looked utterly terrified to be alone with the Lancaster twins. She hadn't moved a muscle since arriving in front of the office door and Ronan wasn't even sure she was breathing at this point.
He snaked a hand into his jean pocket and pulled a cigarette out of the torn up box that rested inside. It only made it out an inch before Rose, standing next to him, noticed it. "For the love of God, not now," she muttered tersely at him, smacking his hand away from his pocket.
Ronan yanked the cigarette out despite Roses's attempts to shove it away. He thought the redhead's eyes would pop out of her head when they landed on the cigarette. "I smoke when I'm stressed," he said to Rose with a shrug, placing the cigarette between his teeth.
"You're outside of the principal's office, no place you haven't frequented before," she hissed, snatching the cigarette from his mouth. "Save it for a more stressful time." She clenched the unlit but still incredibly gross cigarette in her fist, having no intentions to give it back, when Ronan's eyes flicked over her shoulder. She glanced in that direction to see four other students walking towards them, most likely the other four names called, and Ronan tugged the cigarette out from her fingers and slipped it into his pocket before she could protest.
His stash safe on his person again, Ronan took actual notice of who was coming down the hallway. The smallish brunette guy, who looked like just the type Ronan would head towards if he needed some extra cash, and the spacey blonde girl passed him without much acknowledgement of the other, though the guy did look a little uneasy. Ronan wanted to make a comment about already reaching his quota of dead high schooler bodies for the month, but when he saw who else was walking towards them, he blurted out, "Mr. President and Miss Congeniality, the f*** are you doing with the likes of us?"
Andrew halted as soon as Ronan spoke, not sure whether to feel offended or not. As far as he could tell, no one there was like any one else. Using the word 'like' didn't seem appropriate. "I'm as clueless as everyone else it seems," he said diplomatically. He glanced at the locked office door before walking up to it, and Ronan, and asked, "Has anyone tried knocking?" Though he worded the question to include all of them, he posed it towards Ronan, knowing no one was going to risk getting so close to Ronan, who stood next to the door like a guard dog.
"Well, smart guy, if you're so eager to get lectured or expelled by Ms. Oliver, be my guest." Ronan stepped back from the door, bending low at the waist with his arms spread out wide in a mock-bow as if presenting the door to Andrew. The redhead's eyes grew even wider at the word 'expelled' and Ronan was tempted to ask her exactly what se could have possibly done lately to even get a detention.
Andrew ignored Ronan's comment, wanting to tell him that only people like him would associate the office and their principle with such pessimism, but he bit his tongue. He rapped three times on the door and, only a minute later, it opened. The school secretary, an old and extremely skinny lady, panted as she held the door open for them, as if she had run from her desk to the door as soon as Andrew had knocked. She gushed out apologies as Andrew led them into the small space of the main office, which basically functioned as a waiting area for the other offices behind the four doors on either side of the room. The principal's office and the business office were to the right while the guidance counselor and a conference room were to the left.
Andrew took over door holding responsibility as the secretary rushed into the principal's office to fetch Ms. Oliver, who walked out a moment later. The secretary did not, probably collapsed in a chair or possibly right on the floor.
"Thank you for coming," Ms. Oliver said when all seven students had filed in and crammed into the main office. "There is someone here with a very exciting prospect for you all. He says he has an amazing scholarship that you seven are perfect fits for. Now, I know college seems far away, but as Juniors, you do need to keep your future in mind." She walked across the room and opened the door for the conference room. "Come on. I'll introduce you and then let him explain everything."
Ooc:// Loved Louis's comment on Ronan being in a Mexican gang, haha, that was hilarious!

Ooc:// Thanks! ^^
Jace shifted uncomfortably at Ronan's comment. Normally, she could strike up a conversation with just about anyone in her sleep, but she had seen him slip something into her pocket as she walked towards the office. She couldn't make out exactly what it was, but she definitely had her suspicions and she didn't like them very much.
She wasn't a goody two-shoes, necessarily; she had skipped class once or twice and deliberately didn't do homework assignments before (though not very often; her parents would start paying attention if her grades slipped). But illegal substances on school grounds were a different matter entirely. She was tempted to call him on it, but really, it was none of her business and she didn't want to have much to do with Ronan. She was relieved when the door was opened by a flushed, panting secretary. Jace felt a bit bad for her; she was obviously really stressed.
She pushed the thought aside as she stepped through the door after a dark-haired kid...Louie something...and headed towards the principal's office.
~~~~
Anna brushed past Ronan, slipping through the door ahead of him. She paused for just a brief moment before walking in. "Could you please not curse?" she requested politely. "It limits your vocabulary." Ronan didn't seem to smart to begin with - why else would he have joined that Mexican gang people talked about sometimes? - but everyone had potential. That's what Aunt Jenny said.
She didn't wait for a response, unsure of whether it would be rude or not, instead walking through the open doorway. She frowned slightly when she realized how tired the secretary looked. Anna didn't know her name, but she had faint circles under her eyes and she looked a bit pale (and old). She quietly stepped aside to fill a styrofoam cup with a little water from the water dispenser in the corner, placing it on the secretary's desk. She had just enough time to slip into the principal's office with everyone else. It was a bit cramped, but not too bad.
~~~~
Louis listened as Ms. Oliver talked. A scholarship? What would he have gotten a scholarship for? He would be sure to ask whatever college representative was here to talk to them. He wasn't an outstanding student or anything. And then with people like Ronan factored in...it just seemed odd. Andrew or Jacelynn or that girl - Sosahvin? Something like that - he could understand, at least.
He sighed. He hadn't gotten nearly enough sleep last night and was a bit on edge as a result. He shook it off as he walked into the adjoining conference room behind Anna, who was glancing around curiously before her sky blue eyes finally settled on the scholarship person waiting for them.

Ronan paused in the door way, too taken back by the blonde's request to even think up a smart comeback. His mouth hung open just a centimeter in surprise at the girl's guts; no one ever spoke back to Ronan like that. Apparently, his agape mouth signaled to Andrew that Ronan was about to say something rude to the girl because Andrew cleared his throat loudly. Ronan made a point to ram his shoulder into Andrew's as he passed him, not wanting Mr. Perfect to think he had any say in what Ronan did.
Andrew pointedly ignored Ronan jamming his shoulder into his, not wanting to start anything (1) in the principal's office and (2) against someone who could probably put a decent dent into his skull. While Andrew had a broad, athletic sturdiness about him, Ronan's height gave him a slight advantage and his lack of sportsmanship practically guaranteed that he wouldn't fight fair.
Just a tad smug at Andrew's lack of reaction, Ronan returned his attention to the blonde who had more guts than almost everyone in this school, possibly even more than his sister. He watched her as she poured some water for the haggard secretary and placed it on her desk. Ronan smirked at the gesture, respecting this little blonde girl with spacey blue eyes far more than anyone else in the room. No one else would ever think to do something so kind without any credit or prompting. He looked away from her before anyone could see his half-smile, but Rose had caught who her brother's almost smile had been directed towards. "Ro," she muttered with warning under her breath. She didn't know Anna very well, but she knew enough to keep her brother away from anyone that sweet and innocent. Her brother glanced down at her, raising his eyebrows as if to ask, "What?" She pursed her lips in a gesture to say, "You know what." Ronan shrugged as his smirk creeped up the left side of his face even more before he looked towards Ms. Oliver, not really interested in what she had to say but not wanting to continue the silent conversation he was having with Rose more.
Andrew closed the door as the last person, Sosie, walked into the office. She remained near the back of the group, her arms hugged around her first period books. She had hoped this meeting would be a simple picking up of a paper and leaving, but as Ms. Oliver led them into the conference room, she realized it wasn't going to be that easy.
As the seven students filed into the room, a handsome man in perhaps his thirties stood up from the head of the long conference table. "Hello, everyone," he greeted. He smiled politely, showing some teeth and just a crinkle of his eyes, and motioned for them to sit down. "Thank you, Ms. Oliver. I'll keep it quick so these kids can get back to class." Ms. Oliver nodded and exited the room, closing the door behind her just as the bell to signal the end of homeroom sounded.
The man took his seat at the head of the table again as the students settled into seats. Sosie grabbed the chair closet to her, which happened to be quite a few chairs away from the scholarship guy. She watched Ronan walk passed her on the other side of the table and choose a seat at nearly the other end of the room. He tugged the chair all the way out from under the table and plopped into it, leaning back so far the Sosie that it would tip over at any moment. His twin sister, who Sosie only knew as his twin sister, had started to follow her brother before seeming to give up on him and taking a sit across from Sosie. Andrew, as expected, sat nearest to the scholarship man in the chair just to his right.
The man folded his hands on the table in front of him then asked, "So I can assume you all know each other?"
Ronan guffawed loudly from the back of the room, muttering, "You know what they say about assuming things..."
The man looked around at them, seeming to realize that, though Mountain Valley was a small school, it wasn't small enough for the students to intimately know everyone there. "Well then," he stalled, obviously not expecting this little hiccup, "maybe we should start by introducing ourselves. My name's Dr. Anthony Lawrence. I am here to offer you a chance at glory you are not going to want to miss out on." His light blue eyes lit up as he said the words, but then he glanced around the room again and he deflated a bit. "I would like to know a little about you all first though," he said a bit reluctantly.
Ooc:// Feel free to take over Lawrence any time you like! I'm trying to stick to the personality we originally brainstormed with WolfCall: egotistical, arrogant, ambitious, intelligent. I tried to show here that he doesn't have that much interest in learning about the seven personally and really just wants to focus on what they can do for him in the future. I think it might be interesting for him to not pay much attention to their names and, later, if/when they get superhero names, he always refers to them as their superhero name and completely forgets their actual names. Maybe he can even make some mistakes on their names early on, excusing it as not being good with names, but then never makes a mistake with their superhero names? Dunno, just some little details that could bring some depth to his character.

Ooc:// That sounds great to me. And so sorry for taking a while to reply; real life got busy for a while there.
Anna watched Dr. Anthony Lawrence curiously, cocking her head slightly. A chance at glory? That was an odd way to phrase it. A niggling feeling quietly murmured for her not to trust him completely, but Aunt Jenny always said to respect adults even if you don't like them, so she brushed it aside and instead focused on the conversation. She didn't speak up first though; she would give everyone else a chance. Besides, she had some questions, so it would probably be smart for her to wait and be last.
Jace tried to appear very interested as Dr. Anthony Lawrence finished talking. If he was offering her a scholarship, she wanted to make a good impression. Though she still didn't understand exactly how Ronan would qualify for a scholarship...oh well. College wasn't too far in the distance, as her mom reminded her whenever report cards came in.
"I'm Jacelynn Taylor," she offered after a few seconds of silence. Was no one really going to speak up first? "But you can call me Jace."
Dr. Anthony Lawrence was nodding halfway through her sentence, like he was impatient for her to stop talking. Jace tried not to be offended by that. He was probably just eager to get to the details of the scholarship. Colleges seemed to get really excited about incoming students and stuff if the letters in her mailbox were any indication.
After Jace stopped, Louis sighed. He had been hoping that Dr. Anthony Lawrence would explain the details of this scholarship - what could he have qualified for? He was the definition of average - but it seemed like this would have to go first. He was tempted to wait and let everyone else go first, but decided to just get it over with.
"Louis Markus," he said, and left it at that. Dr. Anthony Lawrence didn't respond, just turned expectantly back to the other students who hadn't said anything.

Ooc:// That's okay. And sorry for this kind of short post. Not much inspiration at the moment.
Bic:// Andrew held a hand out to Dr. Lawrence as soon as Louis had announced himself. "Andrew Deveroux, sir," he said as Lawrence reluctantly accepted Andrew's firm handshake. He was about to launch into his two minute introduction on all the activities he was involved in and his plans for the future, but he closed his mouth after letting go of Lawrence's limp hand. The man's eyes were already drifting away to the others, so Andrew merely folded his hands in front of himself. He tried to reason that anything he had to say, Lawrence already knew, why else would he be here to offer Andrew (and the others) a scholarship?
Rose glanced up from fiddling with the ring on her middle finger, muttering, "Rose Lancaster." Lawrence seemed perfectly okay with her short and quiet introduction, because he turned to the red-haired girl across from her.
"Oh, um, I'm, uh, Sosie Flynn," Sosie said, stumbling over her words as she decided between giving Lawrence her full name then, like Jace, giving him her preferred nickname. She wanted to say as little as possible but felt her cheeks burning in a blush as she replayed in her mind her stumbling introduction.
Sosie did have much time to fret because Ronan spoke up immediately after her. "Ronan," he grunted from the back of the room, staring lazily at Lawrence. He expected him to ask for a last name, or at least make some sort of disappointed and/or disgusted face at Ronan for not giving his last name, but Lawrence merely turned to the girl with light blonde hair who was the last to introduce herself.

Anna's blue eyes followed Dr. Lawrence curiously. He didn't seem very interested in them, did he? Oh well. He probably had read their files - did schools actually have files? - and didn't need to know much more. Besides, it wasn't like Anna was involved in much, aside from art club. A scholarship though...that sounded exciting, especially since Aunt Jenny was starting to really encourage her to look into colleges.
A few seconds of silence passed before Anna blinked and realized they were waiting on her. A faint sheepish blush reddened her cheeks as she offered an apologetic smile. "Right, sorry," she started. "I'm Anna. Well, Annalee Hughes, but everyone calls me Anna."
Dr. Lawrence nodded, looking pleased. If Anna had to guess, it was probably because introductions were out of the way and he could keep talking. He seemed to like that more than listening so far. Unfortunately for him, Anna wasn't quite done. "What exactly is this scholarship for?" she asked, cocking her head curiously. He had said he would keep it quick, but she tended to be a bit impatient about stuff like this and wanted to know.
Jace nodded, glancing at Anna and then back at Dr. Anthony Lawrence. She had been going to just wait for him to give the information in his own time, but she didn't mind getting the answer now. Besides, she had to get to first block. She was pretty sure there was a test coming up later...
Louis tapped his fingers absently against the desk, making sure to keep the movement small and quiet to avoid irritating anyone (especially Dr. Lawrence. Impressions were important to scholarship people, right?). He only half-listened to the introductions, a few names filtering through - it wasn't like he was going to hang out with these people much later. Especially Ronan. Or Jace or Andrew for that matter, but that was because they were a bit too popular to be in his circles.
Not that he really had circles...he had a few friends, sure, but really, he preferred the company of his own thoughts more often than not. That was fine with Louis. He wouldn't turn away friends if they came, but he didn't actively seek them out either. It was just the way he was.
He properly tuned back into the conversation when Anna asked a question, though he didn't quite hear what it was (he really needed to pay attention better). Louis listened, hoping to hear a hint as to what they were now talking about.

Lawrence perked up a bit at Anna's question, straightening up in his chair and giving more attention to the teens at the table then he had when they were stating their names. "Well, the truth about the scholarship is there really isn't a scholarship like you are expecting or are used to. I'm not here to offer you a chance to write a boring essay about a political debate you don't care about or participate in a workshop that you don't want to attend to earn some money that, looking at the big picture, won't keep you out of college loan debt. Instead, I am giving you a chance to be something more, something unique, something that no one else in this school could ever hope to be."
He paused and glanced at all their faces expectantly, obviously looking for them to be as excited as he was. Ronan was cocking one of his eyebrows so high that it nearly disappeared behind his bangs. Rose's head was tilted in confusion, her blonde hair spilling across the conference table. Sosie's eyes were huge with fear as she thought about the spotlight that was shining on only herself and the six other students in this room. Sosie didn't strive for attention, and this "opportunity" seemed to be leading to lots of that.
Andrew took a moment to process Lawrence's words, still not having any idea what the man was talking about it. "So this isn't a monetary scholarship?" he asked, speaking up.
"This is about so much more than money," Lawrence exclaimed. He could tell he was losing their interest, so he continued in a softer voice, "I know that each of you has a secret, but you don't know that each of you is carrying the same secret." He paused before finishing. "You have powers."
Sosie felt what little color she had in her face disappear at Lawrence's words. Andrew tried to maintain a composed face but tensed his jaw and his fists. Rose's face didn't change but her mind was racing with this possibility. Could everyone in this room really be hiding the same thing that she was?
Ronan was the only one to move, rocking his chair forward so all four legs were once again on the ground then opened his hands out in front of his chest, his palms facing out. His dark blue eyes stared in concentration at the space between his two hands as he pulled them apart as if running his palms against an invisible wall. "Throw your book at me," he said quietly to Rose, not taking his gaze away from his hands.
"What are you on about?" Rose asked, staring at her brother. Her twin brother. How could he, of everyone in this room, have kept something like this from her? They may not have been the closest siblings ever, but still, Rose felt just a twinge of betrayal.
"Just throw your book at me," Ronan repeated more forcefully than the first time.
"I not going to-"
"Throw the f***ing book, Rose," Ronan growled, already feeling tired from holding the transparent barrier for so long.
"Fine, a**hole," Rose yelled, more upset about the secret than Ronan's words now. She threw her math book at Ronan as hard as she could, but the text book merely slammed into the seemingly empty air just in front of Ronan's chest as if it had hit a concrete wall. It landed with a bang on the ground as Ronan relaxed back into his chair.
"Exactly like that!" Lawrence cheered, standing up from his chair, more animated now that he had confirmation that his experiment had worked. "You can all do something like that, right?"
