Its nice too seen someone trying to help out ^^
But not to be offensive, I think to make a 'good character' it depends on the person. Everyone has different perspectives.
I find sparkle dogs unattractive. Some people love them. It is all about the creator.

Make the character have some substantial meat. And enough with the anti-social edginess on some of 'em. I mean, I've see more than a few who not only would no one want to be around- but are just plain dysfunctional. If you want a dysfunctional character that's fine, but don't expect them to have many friends...Or a mate or a crush for that matter.
And a character that could potential kill you if "angered" or whatever... probably won't have much of a nice side at anytime. The "berserk button" only goes so far. Normal characters who are just like you and me, probably don't really have much of one.
"Can be mean" and "reasonable" probably don't fit together in a list of personality traits, unless a good explanation is given.
Personally I think quite a few exceptions can be made to the tips/rant I've just given- but they need to be explained. Your character is mean and nice- or goes crazy sometimes...?Fine.
But give us some meat here! Explain why that is! (and for godsakes don't say their mom died or something... jeebus people...)
