No Aesope's Fables, and no short stories. I've read the Julie of the Wolves series.
I've already read these:
White Fang
Call of the Wild
Yellow Eyes
Bambi: A Life in the Woods
Bambi's Children
Watership Down
Perri: The Youth of a Squirrel
Does anybody know more?

Ever read Warriors? It's an awesome series about wild cats that live in four seperate Clans. They try to survive by stealing each other's prey, and becoming, hence the title, warriors!

Ahh, a person who likes reading...kinda rare in this day and age...
You might like to try some of these...
Wild Animals I Have Known by Ernest Thompson Seton
Big Red by Jim Kjelgaard (one of my personal favorites)
Stuart Little by E.B. White
Charlotte's Web by E.B. White
Anything by Thornton W. Burgess (he wrote many small novels, you might find these somewhat childish, although I enjoyed the heck out of them. The Adventures of Sammy Jay is pretty good, and an advanced reader can polish each of his many, many tales off in about an hour or so)
The Redwall Series by Brian Jacque
The Chronicals of Narnia by C.S. Lewis (although animals play a bit of a backseat role to the human characters, excepting Aslan of course)
The Jungle Book by Rudyard Kipling
The Poppy Series by Avi and Brian Floca
Sredni Vashtar and Other Stories by Saki (Sredni Vashtar being a short story, albiet a rather horrifying one. Read it, you like it)
Arnie the Darling Starling by Margaret Corbo (although we are beginning to get toward the bottom of the barrel here, this one about a starling that learns to mimic speach is pretty good)
Ringo, The Robber Raccoon: The Story of A True Northwoods Rogue by Robert F. Leslie
There was another one that I can't seem to recall the title of at this time, about a Raccoon that was somewhat tamed by a boy. I think the title was Rascal or something like that, I can't seem to come up with it right now. Anyway, I hope this list helps you out somewhat, if I come up with any more stuff, I'll let you know. Some of these titles may be difficult to find, as some of them may have gone out of print. Good luck and happy reading!

Ok, most of the ones I reccomend have already been reccomended. I highly reccomend Hobby Horse Hill. It's about a girl who has to spend an entire summer with her weird cousins on this place called Hobby Horse Hill.

My Fav book Tooth and Claw is a must read here's the summary...
'Bryna licked frantically at her paws as the full weight of the awfull truth began to settle on her soldiers... the whole of mankind had gone from the town. And yet, how could that be? Men were like the sun, the wind and the rain...Always, always there. And if they were not there - then what?'
Abandoned in the depths of winter, the once pampered pets of men, the cats and the dogs, are left to their own fate. To fend for themselves. Can they survive the cruel weather? Most importantly, can they survive each other?
And later, when the empty town reveals its dark secret, and the hunters become the hunted, it's kill or be killed. To survive, the animals must unite. In the most desperate fight for thier lives.

Two words: JAMES HERRIOT. check his stuff out, and make sure you read the books in order. Or, if you're looking for a fantasy book, try the Redwall series.

Haven't read too many animal fiction books yet, but there are some I can recommend and haven't been mentioned already:
Hunter's Moon (The Foxes of Firstdark) - Garry Kilworth
Hungry for Home - 'Asta Bowen
On my to-read list:
Midnight's Sun - Garry Kilworth (currently reading)
Frost Dancers - Garry Kilworth
I think Garry Kilworth has a nice style of writing and I like how he provides animals with religion and tradition but still retaining realism. You could give him a try.

I'm VERY late to this thread, but I was excited to see it, as animal fiction is a passion of mine! I'm finishing rewrites for my dark fantasy novel, Shadow Rabbit which I hope to have published by mid 2013. It's the story of a rabbit named Katy who lives under a curse. Mastering her supernatural burden is the only hope of living beings everywhere when the human race accidentally creates an undead horror bent on destroying the world of dreams. This is a book written for adults and it has elements of science fiction and horror. If you would like to learn more, here are some links: http://shadowrabbitnovel.com/http://www.indiegogo.com/projects/shado ... /x/2205954I love to find other authors and readers to connect to online! Thanks for starting this thread!
